Even coming off a bye they still manage to get themselves in the headlines. I suppose it had to happen sooner than later though - why not just get it out of the way early in the week must have been their thinking.

Poor old Melbourne can't even survive the bye round without sacking their coach! You would have thought that the bye would have been their friend!

Should have happened a few weeks ago to get the full bye to reset. Complaints about the payout are short sighted. If they were left to rot for another 1/2 to 1 1/2 seasons the Neeld payout would be nothing compared to what they'd need to rebuild the brand.

On the plus side Pauly Roosy will be off our screens next year. No way the AFL will not be throwing buckets at him.

Whilst we'd still have to hear Roosy on the airwaves and on our TVs, at least we'll be likely to hear him talk about something other than the Swannies, Goodsey and co. Not guaranteed mind you, but likely should he be dumb enough to step away from a cushy media gig and into the coaching cauldron again.

Poor Jake; first for Dangerfield, now for Roos.

A man is not collateral ffs!

I'd ****ing lose it (with laughter) if he kept the media persona as coach:

"Howey's the maaaaster of aerial contests."

Next step, get Trengove and Grimes to relinquish the captaincy, give it to Nate Jones.

Create a brand new gameplan centred around pressure and tackling, spend a lot of time focusing on the defensive aspect of the game. MAKE SURE THE PLAYERS STICK TO IT.

It still probably won't work

Yes, but this was said when the sacked Bailey

Perhaps they'll get the idea that if you want to rebuild a brand you need a persona to build it around.

or just a coach capable of having a coherent game plan that the players can relate to and want to play for

Was there any real need to sack him now? I mean really? They have a caretaker coach for the rest of the year, they were already playing the kids. What was to lose by keeping until the end of the year? Then flush out the entire departartment in one hit instead of doing it in drips and drabs throughout the season.

Or is that naive thinking and the club have to be seen to be proactive on this one to save face?

No, I still say you have to have someone with presence. Often they go hand in hand, though.

I'd love to hear him in a press conference answer a question with how his side relates to the Swans way of doing things, sort of like how he now asks an opposition coach all about the Swans in a post match interview (like he did to Hird).

How do you define "presence" though?

I reckon Neeld has some, it's just an awkward, supressed rage sort presence.

Ross Lyon doesn't have your standard "aura" about him, but he's really interesting to listen to.

It seems from the outside that they don't even have a list of non-negotiables. Their pressure is non-existant, their willingness to help each other is rarely seen, do they tackle for more than 1 quarter a week at best etc etc.

Make the rest of 2013 all about the basics required to play the game regardless of game plan. They need to be turned into competitors regardless of the results. Right now they look defeated before before the opening bounce.

"Paul, your side was smashed around the clearances by the Swans today, is that a concern?"

"Yeah look, we were just too good today. When you've got Jacky and Danny and Goodsey around the ball, we're always going to be difficult to beat. Unfortunately the Demons kids just aren't up to it yet."

If you've got time to wait for the point...!
Seriously - how do teams perform under him? You'd think most would be asleep 5 minutes into a team meeting..!

Sacking Bailey wasn't wrong. Hiring Neeld was.

Deciding to sack Cameron Schwab, and then deciding after an 186 point loss to not sack Schwab , is where I like to say the problem started. Basically left them in purgatory imo. There's no rule saying you can't sack your coach and CEO on the same day...

also i guess not having a clear head of football was problematic.
