If it stops commentators forever ruining great plays with woeful calls and getting names wrong then I'm all for it.

Think there was a great play by a Richmond defender last year and either basil or hamish called the whole thing using the wrong name. What's worse in all the highlights were played in the news all you hear is that stupid error.

Basil almost ruined Ryder's winning goal against Freo by saying the wrong name.

Except when Basil does night games. Which he did there. The other thing is sometimes you get the players name wrong simply because you can't get a good look at their face non number, so names on the back won't do anything there. And sometimes you are a dumb idiot who is terrible with names like basil

It depends how tightly they want to apply the name(s) allowed. Only last names? Initials? Both names? Or do you want something absolutely absurd like 'Chicharito' (just a nickname meaning 'little pea' apparently, wtf??) on the back?

As some have said, the speed of the game means it'd be hard to spot names on jumpers clearly enough to identify the player, whereas a bit of familiarity with player numbers or a good old Footy Record should be plenty enough.

That was BT. Basil does afternoons, BT does nights

It was Basil for that game that stuffed up the call of Ryder, presumably because it was in WA or perhaps because Bruce was unavailable.

Just on the names on jumpers, how the **** do you get Bellchambers on the back of a jumper without writing it in tiny font? Or Luenberger or Polkinghorne or the worst I can think of Roberts-Thompson.

In theory I don't hate the idea, but in practise, the writing will be too small to see at the ground and the game will be too fast to see it on TV...

I'm not a fan of it, really what is the point? So fans can recognize the players? If you are watching on TV or live the names are going to be so small you can't make out who it is anyway.

Meh.

Talking of jumpers...

What are the thoughts about the player names being on the back of them?

Personally, while it's not exactly the biggest issue, I'm not a fan of it.

I don't mind departing from tradition if it is to better things but I've never seen the point. It is not like you can see the writing when you're at the ground. When watching on TV the commentator calls the name while you watch so it is quite easy to put 2 and 2 together.

It reeks of a code which is in fear of having its own identity.

I like it if only because there will be a bunch of WC fans running around with Dick on their backs. Also Sidebottom.

Hope it is not the first initial and surname - K.Hunt would not be great either

Shit.

Aside from the tradition side of things, the game moves too fast for anyone to have any chance of reading them either at the ground or on TV.

How do people know this though? Has there been a game with names on the jumpers so we know how it will turn out or are people just reacting badly to a new idea for the sake of it?

I think it's the opposite. Implementing a new idea for the sake of it.

They've been on the back of the International Rules jumpers and I cannot remember ever being able to read them in general play. Also, a lot of footy is played side on to the cameras (exceptions are things like set shots and kick ins), how will that help?

You stole my thunder.

That combined with the ground being too big to read names unless they're in your immediate vicinity makes it a pointless exercise.

It strikes me as a pointless marketing gimmick.

But no doubt it will be dressed up as helping the spectators identify players, though in practice I really don't think it will help much at all.

Would it be a push from the players association at all? To try and increase the value of the players names In regards to marketing and promotional deals they get asked to do?

That's Me trying to look at it as almost advertising space point of view.

I support it %100. Would love to see a poll of what the players think. I'd put money on a huge chunk being in favor of the names.

Will be cool in a few years time seeing the names of retired players on the back of fans guernseys.

Even if the move is %100 marketing by the AFL I don't care.

How can you say it looks like arse... Has there even been pictures put up other than the GWS one?
