Cheers, just saw in the video that they won't be taking out the NMFC etc initials. If this is going to work then they need to fully commit and get rid of that stuff imo.

That's a pretty thin argument.
The argument for it is equally thin.

1) Will it make players easier to identify? Not much, they're running around at speed and they have numbers as is.
2) Other sports do it- so what? Why must our game being a carbon copy of other sports in this respect?

What exactly, at the end of the day, is the pressing issue that means this must be done?

We have got by absolutely fine for nigh on 100 years with just the numbers on the back. It's not going to make the job of a nuffy commentator like BT or Basil much easier, and besides, if they're so poor at their job that they still get player names wrong as often as they do, then they probably shouldn't be commentating.

I really struggle to see this as being anything beyond a ploy to appeal to the soccer demographic a little more and to have an excuse to bring out a new whole set of merchandise- which means more dollars.

More dollars for the game is a good thing, if people are more willing to buy merch because of the names then great. And I think they will be.

Will it make players easier to identify? Yepp, maybe not by a huge margin but in certain instances it will help.
Honestly don't think it is being brought in to appeal to the soccer demographic. I think it's being brought in because quite frankly it works in other leagues and there is interest from a decent amount of players and fans here to have them.. So may has well give it a trial.

We did well for a 100 years without the names? Good on us, I'm sure if they're introduced properly we'll have a solid 100 years with them.

Though the positives aren't huge, they outweigh the negatives in my opinion.. Nobody is hyping this up as some monumental change or even a truly needed one, just something that might benefit the growth of the game in a small way.

Now view that while he's being tackled on the opposite wing.

It is not being implemented to make it easier for people in the actual stands.

Its for new fans and that means TV watchers - Seeing that close to 90% of people watch games in TV, that's the target market. And once you familiarise yourself with the name and the number it will work OK in normal motion.

What right do Adelaide have to appropriate history from before their existence?

What right does Patrick Dangerfield have to wear the SA jumper? Taylor Walker? Daniel Talia?

This. Plus I have an eight year old daughter, so I will save $45p.a. on buying the footy record, and save me from sixty-three 'who was that dad' per game.

If your daughter will be able to read the names when watching live at the ground, she must have super human eyes. The writing will be too small most of the time, the angle the players play on is generally side on and the game moves to quick.

Its purely to sell more jumpers and for TV, it will be next to useless at the ground.

At worst it's unnecessary, at best it's useful.

I can't see anything detrimental about having a name on the back... outside of loosing the ability to show off the hundreds of hours I misspend watching 'footy stuff'

Nigel Smart now also sounds like a dick instead of just looking like one with his arrogant defence of Adelaide's incredibly selfish decision to wear the state jumper. Just really poor form. Chris McDermott nailed it though. What should be a celebration of all things football in South Australia, a very proud day for the state, is now a negative talking point so Adelaide can make a few $$$. Pathetic and the AFL should veto it.
