Anyone hear about the AFL plans to air a footy match from New Zealnad into Aus at 11am next year on ANZAC day? You know right in the middle of Marches and ceremonies? Absolute madness but not surprising the AFL trying to commercialise a day where the football should always come second.
Essendon and Collingwood actually sought permission to be able to play in the afternoon as most sporting events (in vic at least) are banned in the morning. AFL goes and schedules a game in New Zealand to get around that. Gillons arguement? "We need to schedule 5 games on ANZAC day"

Disgusting behaviour.

I dunno, doesn't phase me much to be honest.

Yeah? No issue with the fact its right in the middle of times where we should be paying respects and celebrating? I just think its fairly poor, obviously a money grab and for a day that has always been about remembering the ANZACs is becoming more and more about football.

Maybe it just reflects the fact that I've become so used to the AFL making money grabs left, right and centre that it's a case of "what's another one?"

The time difference is a sneaky workaround.

Yeah to be honest its not surprising, but i dont think it makes it acceptable either. It could be me nitpicking a bit too, i despise most things about them now so Im a bit biased in that regard

A simple look at it is this- will it likely mean less people will go to morning services and matches if the game is on at 11am? If the answer is yes, then it shouldn't happen. And the answer is a definite yes.

Why do we need 5 games on ANZAC Day? Was there any reasonable argument put forth?

I think it's ****ing disgusting. I have my own mental image of what being at war would be like, then have absolutely no doubt I'm not even close to the mark as to how it must've been for the men who have fought, let alone the different men they returned as compared to when they left.

The AFL has done a fantastic job to raise awareness of the meaning of ANZAC Day, football can be a great medium for sending a strong message to the community or even educating the community. Let's give these absolute heroes, because that's what the veterans are, their moment to shine.

If 5 games on ANZAC Day is a KPI, then I ask where is this integrity the AFL speaks of so much? Football can take a back seat.

Oh i dont think its an attendance issue, frankly if someone decides to watch a football match or attend one instead of attending a service that says more about the person than the AFL. (not a bad thing either, some people dont attend these things and i would never blame someone for not going as its their choice).

My issue is that is shouldnt happen because as a country we are slowly forgetting the past, as generations move on these days of remembrence lose a little bit of their strength.
By scheduling games, and detracting from what the day should be you target those that arent as affected by this day and you give them a reason to not educate themselves. The stalwarts will go to the services, the people that have always gone.
But its the young people and the people who maybe dont have family members who served who will be missing out. As BTG said, its the 100th anniversary, this one should be a big reminder of what this day means it should re-energise the whole meaning of this day so that is carried on just as strong for another 100, we shouldnt have distractions introduced as they are just that, a sideshow, they mean nothing in the scheme of things, i find it upsetting that the AFL again prove that they are nothing but a money hungry organisation. The day means nothing to them apart from a way of slappinga fancy name on a game and making as much money as they can through it.

Sh**ing on the meaning of it all, for what? More money.

I might be making too big of a deal out of it, but ANZAC day is a bit of a thing in my family, so this struck a nerve with me.

Richmond supporters banging on about making the finals. They do realise they have Adelaide in Adelaide and Sydney in Sydney in the last three rounds? They would have to win both of them.

HOLY HELL! How is that still allowed on youtube?

You are able to turn a corner and still not be at your peak form Yaco... They were very good for periods against the Swans, just couldnt score, which against Sydney is nothing really unheard of, the point is they have their run back They have improved on their last few weeks.

Collingwood's form against the WC vindicates my oipinion about Power. Power's issue is not their running power - It's their disposal efficiency.

How would you make up the fixture seeing that Anzac Day falls on a Sunday ? You can't play the remaining games on a Friday or Saturday ? Do you have a concern for the WA Diggers - They would be affected every year with the starting time of the Anzac Day game in Melbourne - It's a fact of life that there are time differences throughout the world.

NOT FOOTBALL RELATED BUT SEVERELY DISTURBING

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT INCLUDED. DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH

Tony Steward hits and kills Kevin Ward

Why the hell would you walk onto a track full of speeding cars. Having said that, it looks like the guy swerved into him.

Actually falls on a saturday next year...
How would i make up thje fixture? id work around it, they work around Easter every year they can work around this if they wanted to (my point is they dont, they want the moneys, which i think is poor form) They can do what they always do and schedule the game in NZ at night if they wanted.

Bloody Vic Government aren't giving us the Monday after ANZAC day off as an in lieu public holiday. It's their fault.... Napthine's fault.

For a while now the ANZAC Day holiday has been observed on ANZAC Day, regardless of whether it's a weekend or not.

In Vic yes, in WA it's usually a public holiday in lieu (and is again in 2015).

SA is in the same boat as Vic. I thought it was a national thing, I obviously thought wrong.
Also, I think if it is a Sunday there is a Monday public holiday - but I could be wrong with that one.
