Non-Essendon Thread IX

They should move Marley Williams in there, he has good hands and as hard as nails. He also moves well through congestion, it would allow Pendles to move into a second possession role where he is much more effective at hitting targets.

Watch this space. Looked the goods tonight.

Looks like Burbury will be eating through a straw for a while.
That was a shocking hit, apparantly it wasn't as bad as first thought but I was very surprised he got up after that. Looked bloody painful.

Found this interesting when tweeted last night. I know it really means little, but still a few eye openers for me. North, Carlton, Footscray seem too old for the output they have been dishing up.

We sit pretty well IMHO - Fletch and Chapman probably skew us a bit, but overall we should push up in age (experience) with our pushing up on the ladder.

We were in the bottom quartile last year from memory and the team we usually fielded was in the relatively low-band compared to clubs like Port, Brisbane, etc. Dogs fielded an older team that we did when we played them.

The age of the list doesn't necessarily reflect the respective age of the best 22-25, more the maturity of the entire list as a whole.

Teams we fielded vs the teams above us last year:
Hawthorn (game 1): 26y3m 120.4 games vs North 24y7m 74.8 games (loss 3 points)
Hawthorn (game 2): 26y0m 114.4 games vs North 24y7m 76.7 games (loss 14 points)
Fremantle: 24y11m 73.2 games vs North 25y2m 86.2 games (loss 38 points)
Geelong: (game 1): 25y11m 106.8 games vs North 24y7m 79.4 games (loss 4 points)
Geelong: (game 2): 26y1m 110.0 games vs North 24y5m 73.3 games (win 10 points)
Sydney: 26y10m 126.8 games vs North 24y6m 78.8 games (loss 39 points)
Richmond: 24y11m 80.0 games vs North 25y0m 83.0 games (win 62 points)
Collingwood (game 1): 25y7m 103.6 games vs North 24y5m 77.0 games (loss 16 points)
Collingwood (game 2): 25y0m 87.7 games vs North 24y5m 74.6 games (win 11 points)
Essendon: 24y2m 61.5 games vs North 24y8m 70.5 games (win 45 points)
Port Adelaide: 24y1m 70.5 games vs North 24y5m 72.6 games (win 10 points)
Carlton: 25y6m 95.0 games vs North 24y11m 82.0 games (loss 1 point)

Fremantle fielded a younger side against us than normal (Pav, Sav and some older players were injured), that was one of our worst losses for the season but on the road and in the rain wasn't our strong suit and with Ziebell and Cunnington missing didn't suit a scrappy contested contest in the wet so that result wasn't surprising. Freo typically fields a team over 26 years old and around 100 games of experience.

That ultimately is the benchmark, teams that are mature and experience but not decrepit and on the way out have stronger results and we typically went okay against teams we batted relatively evenly against. I think once you field a 25-26 year old side with around 100 games experience average then I think you should be looking to be a contender, we were still well off it last year and part of the motivation towards picking up someone like Dal Santo.

Brisbane got decimated last night.

Right, but who has many older players not in their best 25 just hanging around?

It is what it is, the age of the list. No ways around it.

Teams have to start organising squads together I reckon.

I think last night was a total waste of time for Hawthorn AND Brisbane. Just two polar opposite mentalities going into the game.

You just know that if they falter during the season the Hun have a pre-built headline.

Older players not in the best 22 is what is referred to as depth.

Guys who aren't in our best 22 and who aren't young:
Nahas 26
Anthony 26
Greenwood 24
Currie 24
Tippett 25
Wallace 25

Most clubs are around 23-24 years of age across the entire list but most of the contenders last year are 26 years old or over with their best team. Our oldest team we fielded just crawled over 25 years old and it only hit that high when younger players were injured/suspended and were replaced by older depth players. Our best team is younger and better than our oldest team.

We aren't going to be a very good team until the good quality players mature, most are around 22-24 years old with a few above that, in a few years we will be able to push our core side to 26+ and it will be over 100 games experience average and as the team ages you invest more in younger players to compensate, which keeps your average list age in balance.
