Very interesting, but one big issue - the fixture. If you don't play the top teams until season's end, you'll get a worse pick than you might otherwise have deserved. The league would need to recommit to the old 'play everyone once before any repeats' model I think.

That model might have been boring in a sense, but I still believe it was better than the randomised crap we have now.

We played West Coast twice (just six rounds apart, too) before we played North at all last year.

That's just silly in my view.

I guess the other question is what defines 'out of finals contention'? I'm sure there are many occasions where a side is a mathematical chance of making it as long as they beat every side in the top 8 and the top 8 lose every game for the rest of the season.
