NRL killed off MNF because crowd figures were poor, TV figures however were still very high (considering its only on Fox)
NFL is almost guaranteed to fill almost any stadium on almost any night, so a MNF game will still draw near max capacity, while also having extremely high TV ratings.
Also the NFL cant play on Fridays and Saturdays because thats for college ball
They should have just gotten Kochy to hook them up with the Port Tarp deal.

How is professional success going to get people to stop following their AFL/NRL teams and invest in local soccer teams? People love to see Juventus and Liverpool when they come and play at our grounds but it hasn't translated to A-League crowds.

As for time, we've had a lot of time. There's been numerous articles about how soccer will take over in Australia and North America in due time because of immigrants bringing their preference with them yet it's barely made a dint over the course of a century.
Fair points. Quality dialogue, I love it.:thumbsu:

I've never really seen it as A-League wanting to make you stop supporting another code, it's simply trying to get you across to it to spend your hard earned on it as well. It's only real rival during the Summer is Big Bash so it's not that crazy an idea to think that it won't get people through the turnstiles. It's up to them and how they do it though.

In respect of crowds that attend games like Juventus & Liverpool not translating, well they're evidence of the power behind soccer as opposed to thinking those numbers will always be at A-League games. They won't as the current model stands. However people will attend if they think they're going to see quality because we're a fickle lot and we won't watch shite. Melbourne crowds have traditionally been larger than others, particularly Victory, but they have to maintain them too. That's what the A-League has to work on. In it's favour though is that the quality of A-League games has grown substantially each year. My god, I remember the first game at Olympic Park and to see where it is now is incredible really considering the short amount of time the A-League has been around. And with that brings & keeps talent, which leads to memberships, more coin in the club coffers, etc etc etc.

Personally I'm with you in that it won't take over from AFL in the foreseeable future. What I continually see though with it is that the promotion of soccer has never had more drive or had more money than it has now. It's really up to them and how they use that from here on out.

Cheers

Great post.

When I read the word "threat" I think it may be the wrong word to use as it kind of suggests supplanting.

I agree - the act of kicking is (IMO) is prior opportunity.

If he was instantly tackled without the kicking motion - then no prior.

If he had not adequately gained control of the ball (ie. was still fumbling) - no prior.

You think it should be HTB or not HTB?

it shouldn't be holding the ball. he's tackled as soon as he gets it, and he's still made a clearly legitimate attempt to kick it, so there's nothing going for it. if anyone's expecting that to be paid than they are totally totally deluded. that's not what dropping the ball is there for.

Was thinking that the FA Cup final is played during the day at a neutral venue.

It shits me to no end that English soccer is ignored as a model for a supporter engagement. For a start we share more cultural similarities with the Brits than anyone else and our game is even more rich in its traditions and history. In the AFL, the tribal part of supporting a football club was identical until the early 90s when the suburban grounds were phased out of the game. In the VFL, SANFL and WAFL it existed until the the game became national.

If the AFL is really concerned with being overtaken by soccer it will need to dramatically change its direction. The most important thing to develop and maintain is the good parts of the tribal culture which are withering to the point of non-existence. Young generations of fans need to be taught to love the game for what it is or it will all be for nothing. This starts in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania (not ******* Western Sydney or on the Gold Coast).

The problem with the Premier League as a model for supporter engagement is that we were there and there are no shiny lights and nothing sexy to sell stakeholders.

Only marketing people could fool themselves into the sort of circular thinking that results in a brand pandering to the short attention spans of contemporary markets. It seems to me that once your engaged you've become the latest fad to be dismissed.
It won't be held up as a model for as long as this league exists, because the clubs simply aren't in a position to engage with their 'local community' when their 'local community' is so large and the clubs are so distant from most of them, particularly for those outside Victoria.

I don't understand the need for it.

There is nothing to suggest that viewership is compromised in anyway by the game being played in the traditional time slot.

What is the only reason for it? To have some pretty pyrotechnics during the half time entertainment and at the end to celebrate the victor?

Frankly, I don't understand why people even bother to watch the half time entertainment.
I hate fireworks - HK is crazy about fireworks - It happens at least 5 or 6 times each year -It's an undeniable fact that more people will watch a night GF on TV - TV figures are always higher in the evening - At the end of the day, games used to only be played on a Saturday afternoon, thenit became Sunday afternoon, Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night and then Monday and Thursday night - Things change without us realising.

Is it just me, or are North easily the most boring team in the comp. name a star they have... Goldstein, then who? Boomer? Ha.

I can think of literally any other team and immediately think of at last 3-5 players I'd love at Essendon.

A couple of lesser team examples - Brisbane - Beams, Shache, Hipwood, Hanley, Rockliff

Richmond - Riewoldt, Martin, Rance, Cotchin.

GC - Lynch, Gaz, Prestia, JOM, Martin.

North- Goldstein.... Ziebell, that's it!

Who are their attractive players?

Do they play Thursday and Monday now too? I didn't even realise.

So brisbane appear to be down to 2 in their Hunt for a coach. Fagan who hasn't even been an assistant coach since 2004, and Barker. I'm thinking Leppa might have some more fans up there now that lots of potential candidates ruled themselves out.

What odds that the first coach sacked is one that hasn't even been appointed yet?

I think would-be senior coaches who have the talent to succeed at the top level have learnt to avoid jobs like that. They're probably looking at a huge rebuild and realise that anyone taking on the role is probably not going to be around to see them in finals contention, and they know that very few senior coaches get more than one crack at the top level.

I reckon they'd be better going the Melbourne/GWS route and appointing an experienced couch to weather the storm in the short term and a trainee to take over in 3 years time.

Mason Wood is the only player on their list under 27 years old that i would be excited about getting to essendon.

Most Vanilla list in the AFL
