Is it too much to suggest that, in time, Bont COULD be the best ever Bulldog? Obviously a long way to go, but he's had a ridiculous start to his career.

Even yesterday after a quiet first half, he manages to lift for some big plays in a high-pressure game like that. Wow.

Never saw him play but to get past Whitten would be a mighty effort, like getting past Reynolds for us.

Not just Whitten; guys like Johnson and Grant won't be easy to unseat either.

On a different note I managed to have a really heated argument/almost falling out about Wayne Carey of all people. Weird
What happened?

Yeah, it's a shame there weren't first class state league's they could grab their players from. That would have ensured their soul...

While my problem is not expansion of the game or whether GWS has a soul, it's the pillaging of the draft and the Riverina setting GWS up for virtually never ending success for a part of Australia that could not give a shit about the game, my response to your post is that it does give a club an immediate soul.

West Coast and Adelaide were an attempt to bring together as much of existing football culture in those states, stretching back over 100 years, as was possible. It's wasn't perfect, and there were disenfranchised parts of the existing culture, but those clubs had immediate and extensive support.

The roots of the Fremantle Dockers stretch back to the early 1880s (and the foundation of Australian football in Western Australia) and can be directly traced to East Fremantle (est 1898) and South Fremantle (est 1900). There is a rich football heritage in Fremantle, and what it represents in a geographic sense, and the clubs have produced and still produce huge numbers of quality footballers.

Whether Port Power was initially linked to Port Magpies is irrelevant. The history of Port Adelaide starts in 1870 and the foundation of the Port Magpies.

West Coast, Adelaide, Fremantle and Port were born with a soul.

If Chris Grant was a "premiership CHF" he'd be regarded as one of the best players of all time.

He'd play on Wayne Carey, beat or break even with him for a time, and kick 3-5 in the same game.

Chris Grant was a bona fide star.

Not bad for a pick 105!

My first reaction to that was "nahhhh, level below", but seven best and fairests and five AAs for West; that's quite a record.
Almost won a Brownlow in 06 too.

He may not ever be worth $1,000,000 but i think the Dogs would be pretty happy with Tom Boyd after last nights game. Yes he got dominated at times in the ruck but i thought he stood up last night.

Someone mentioned Wayne Carey shouldn't ever be allowed to be in the media given his past indiscretions. I made the mistake of disagreeing and saying things like 'I believe in rehabilitation and a second chance' and 'you can't deprive someone of pursuing their chosen career because they went off the rails'. Then my so called mates managed to gang up and get stuck into me, one in particular. They were being absolute pricks. Ridiculous argument that escalated. Didn't help that I was pretty drunk and am very sensitive.

If Brian Waldron can get sport media jobs after what he did anyone should be able to.

Also, any discussion about Footscray champions isn't complete without mentioning names like Sutton, Hawkins and Dempsey.

John Schultz, Don Ross, Harry Hickey and George Bisset likewise.

Spewing we didn't grab Tory Dickson when we had the chance.

It was pretty obvious he had more tricks than Angus Monfries at the time but we stuck with the conservative approach. We lost Jenkins in that same draft.

Absolute disaster for us.
