How can people be so ignorant about the long long history of racism associated with calling black people monkeys? Especially after the Goodes incident. It beggars belief that some are still trying to suggest the banana could be in any way incidental.

It's impossible for it not to have been racist. There are lots of different fruits than bananas and lots of non indigenous players out there - had to have been racist. The Goodes incident I thought there was a little bit more doubt but I'm in the minority with that one.

It's just a damn shame this stuff still happens. It makes no sense at all being racist, let alone being racist at the football.

She is sadly either a product of her environment (includes little to no contact with people outside her own anglo saxon heritage) or she is a very ordinary human all in all. My pick is the former. As a result I'd love to see her made to be involved with indigenous programmes.
She needs to be educated & she needs help.

We also should be very careful here as we don't want a situation that drives a person to self harm as a result of this highly charged topic.

No - You don't want these people involved in any INDIGENOUS programs or the like - It's unfair to groups that need assistance - And it's a lazy way of thinking in the community - Person X does wrong so we help them with Program Y - We don't need to waste more money on education - We will also have issues, as long as we have a society that allows, and encourages booing and negative behaviour, towards the opposition.

Yeah, i just read some of her dad's comments :(

Not sure i need credit for telling kids not to throw food... would have thought it was common sense, yet sadly her we are.
Id be interested to hear from the banana thrower after she has done a bit of community service and hopeful gained some perspective (and basic manners).

Community service for the young lady ? - Why would you inflict this lady on people in the community who actually need help and understanding - It's unfair on these who are in need.

I'd be willing to give the benefit of the doubt that she was unaware of 'banana throwing' as being a racist taunt(I was), but she still threw something at a player on the field. She's not a teenager like in the Goodes situation, she's a grown woman who should know better, **** her off for good, she's a fool.

It was a pre-meditated act - Lady reached into her handbag, found a banana, and threw it in Bett's direction' How many people take bananas to the footy ? n

Maybe she didnt want to eat overpriced unhealthy food and brought in a few bits of fruit

Right, now when do we blame Betts for provoking her by being good at football and boo him out of the game?

Probably wont as Eddie has not been Australian of the year and made comments that some so called non racists did not want to hear.

At least 1 it seems.
Did you ignore the rest of the thread? I accepted it was a pre-meditated racial attack, certainly not defending her now.

I have in at various times. Can say when i have i have eaten them 100% of the time. As far as handbags go well i did take one to the footy once back in the 80's. Quite a few of us did and we them them onto the ground when "handbags Beasley" was at our end of the Western Oval. Think it backfired though as from memory he kicked more than 5 goals but he got a laugh out of it.

When Betts starts to have a cry like Goodes.
Having said that Betts has much more justification to be upset... Ill draw the line at giving him Australian of the Year but

Calm down Yaco. It's not unfair. You don't meet hate head on with more hate. Gets you nowhere. You bring compassion to the table and you do your hardest to turn this horrible situation into a good one. How's education a waste of money? What a ridiculous thing to say.

If lady has banana to fling, she racist.

If Bomber has off-site injection, he drug cheat.

On the surface it looks racist but we really don't know her true motives. We are assuming they were racist motives. It looks terrible and should be expressed as such from the AFL. To do otherwise is as culturally insensitive as the girl's actions.

The problem for her is that this is a public crucifixion that undoubtedly could have big ramifications for the girl's reputation. I'm always very careful not to be part of a social media lynching. I think it is massively problematic and often judgment is made through a narrow prism.

The Goodes thing was racist as much as people try to argue around the fact. Sure, most boo him because they didn't like him as a player but once it was known that it was racially offensive to Goodesy it should never have escalated to more intense booing. This goes to the core of our ignorance on culturally sensitive issues in that we are oblivious to the hurt it causes. It also undoubtedly attracted racist fans to join in the booing because they could hide behind the mass indignation of those who were booing in defiance of Goodesy's stance.

Getting there... on the Port thread" No-one saying a thing about Eddie's behaviour leading up to the incident or whether the AFC will apologise for that. Sure, doesn't excuse it but Eddie provoked the crowd twice with his 4th and 5th goals by doing his chest-beating bit at the Port crowd. Adelaide are probably trying to work out some way that they can demand apologies for all the supporters who took offence at his actions after his final goal. Maybe they should do something about the Justin Bieber fans who were deliberately screaming in my ear for most of the last quarter."
