The weight of expectations has been on Carlton for a long time. They made a prelim beating Sydney by a goal (they missed 14) and then Melbourne by 2 points (they missed 17).

They just missed out in 2022.

But they've been the media picks for a big player in the finals for years. Curnow, McKay, Weitering are 27 this year.

To be fair they only really bought the ‘87 one when Elliot was in his pomp. The ‘95 one was odd - wedged in the middle of Eagles, North minor dynasties. Still, it’s hard to argue with losing only two matches in a season.

The 60s, 70s and early 80s flags (won when I was a young supporter) were fairly achieved.
Carlton won the 1968 and 1970 flags with the help of ron Barrassi, who left at the end of 1971. They won the 1972 flag as well off the back of the premiership players of 1968 and 1970.

Carlton won the 1979, 1981 and 1982 flags with Mike fitzpatrick in that side. he was Captain in 1981-2. Other WA blokes that played in the 1981-2 flags was peter bousustow and Ken Hunter.

Carlton won the 1987 and 1995 flags with SA blokes in Stephen Kernahan and Craig Bradley

Not sure how 3rd favourite in the odds makes them a dark horse, I think they’re going to be the team to beat. We don’t play them until round 23 so have time to plan how to beat them 😀
Well, in all fairness, only one team can win it. If you're not the favourite then everybody is the dark horse.

But in all seriousness, I haven't heard too many people in the "know" talking them up to be the team to beat. But I reckon they could be the team to go all the way........ Apart from us. ;)

Incredibly smug, but he's one of the better journalists and it pains me to say it.
You really think so? He’s factually incorrect on quite a regular basis. Also loves to double down when he’s been proven wrong.
I think it says more about the state of the alternative journalists when you say that!
Though I will admit MaClure can be entertaining at times amongst all the shit he talks

Not sure I agree with you. He is both painfully smug and painfully good at his job.

I might be missing things but he's generally pretty good with his rumours and sauces, his opinion is the worst kind of Vicbias horseshit though

Yeah, this.

Even when he's been forced t withdraw a story, he's been proven right eventually. If you can separate fact from opinion, his facts are worth paying attention to. His opinions are dogshit. Bit like Damo, they won't run with a story, without having it confirmed.

Also, as this excellent example shows, he opinion is extra horseshit on anything to do with Carlton

Maybe I don’t pay enough attention to him. He writes for the age which means his standard of writing must be better than most of the herald sun guys, but off the top of my head in the last couple of years alone he was wrong about
  • west coast not picking Harley reid
  • Dustin Martin going to gold coast (I believe he said this 2 years in a row and he stayed, twice)

I guess it depends what criteria you use to judge a good journalist. For example, I don’t really like Whately but can’t argue he’s a fantastic wordsmith with a talent for articulating his thoughts in a very accomplished manner.
Some fans would probably judge them by “how accurate are their big stories?”
Rhino would be well up there here in that category. Twomey is the best though.

He trippled down on Dusty, reckons it will happen this year. The Reid stuff came out around when the rumours of Harley not wanting to go happened. I'd be very surprised if Harley was keen to go to the Eagles, it's not like any of us would blame him.

He goes early on some stories to get in first and sometimes it misses. This happens to almost all of them, including Rhino and Twomey. Usually when they've got some inside word but someone changes their mind.

When you hear him talk outside of his main commitments (if you can get through all the smug), it's clear he's not an idiot, which is more than you can say for most of the AFL media.

Not just those eastern staters
Also had Hunter & Dorotich if memory serves correct
sorry, just read your post properly.
the media made a big thing about those mullet heads (admittedly, they were both stars), but Carlton were very WA aligned, not just mullet heads.
Sid Jackson even earlier.
even their current captain is a WA guy.

I was being serious.
I have them top 4. I like their list, I think that Briggs guy might get found out, he was a bit of a surprise packet last year. So I think ruck is their possible Achilles. But they seem strong elsewhere.
To me the biggest disadvantage both GWS and gold coast have is their home crowds are so s**t they are not able to make home games a fortress, like a contending interstate team should be able to do. I know of course they have won close games, but has a GWS crowd ever got them over the line in a close game?
GWS games at Canberra (Manuka Oval) actually have developed a pretty solid atmosphere, and the crowd has got them over the line in close ones - I particularly recall the games in 2016 against Geelong and 2017 against the defending premiers Doggies (2 point upset win) as being big crowd driven wins. Sydnaknee GWS crowds are rubbish but, and haven't created better atmosphere despite the better winning records in the 2020s...

Problem with Mcclure is he carries massive grudges.
He was certain Coniglio was gonna go to Carlton and was stoked. Then when cogs took less money to at gws he put out a series of articles claiming cogs contract would destroy gws … he still hasn’t gotten over Carlton being rejected
