Seriously at this point who would want to sign for 7 years with Essendon?
Any player would. Seriously.
Subtract their unprecedented injuries this year, and they play finals.
Some of those will still miss a lot of 26, but talent is there.
Essendon is a great club with a huge fan base.
From 27 onwards, they should be in the mix for a good era.

Not totally convinced they play finals but they are definitely in that group of teams from 7th to 12th who were a chance with 2 or 3 games left in the season.

They really need to lean in more for how big games like Anzac Day and Dreamtime are as well when it comes to recruitment. If I was good enough to play AFL but couldn't play for Geelong, Bombers would be my 2nd choice.

Not even their captain wants to be there. Not a good sign. That was us in 1999.

I'm pretty sure I've never seen it interpreted this way in the AFLW - every week we see an opposition player watch on at the ball bounces over the line rather than making a play for it

LAST DISPOSAL

A free kick will now be awarded when the ball crosses the line from a disposal between the arcs, bringing the men's game in line with the AFLW's 'lasso' rule.

It will operate similar to SANFL in the sense that if a player blocks an opponent or doesn't play the ball before it crosses the line, a normal boundary throw-in will occur instead of a last disposal free kick.

hate this rule and the interpretations of it.

just cant

That is some seriously impressive channeling of Andrew Welsh from you there, Dubs. Seems like 'blue sky thinking' on steroids to me.

And given it's the Dons we're talking about, that seems very fitting.

7 new rules for 2026 - 6 of these I understand, but as for #2 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I can see nothing but issues with #2 and after a month they scrap it

#2 is by far the dumbest thing I've seen from the rules committee in some time.

Are players who were knocked to ground in the contest expected to stay laying down while the kick is taken? What about those crumbing front and centre, should they stand still also if the mark is taken?

Imagine 7 players having to stand still in this scenario after the mark is taken while Barry takes the kick.

Would be unwatchable nonsense if they go ahead with it.

When you say elite players, you mean him, right? They don't have any other elite players on their list.
They do.
Nic Martin
Sam Durham
Both would walk into our best 22 easily (uninjured)

Lol. Do you really think 7 players will have to stand on the mark? The wording will be improved to make it clear that it means one player.

That already exists, does it not? A single player not allowed to leave the area is the stand rule.

This is a new rule according to them, any player within the 5m area of the contest is unable to leave the area. Their words, not mine.

The handful of examples they provide are 1:1 contests in the open, so unless they think the game is played in a vacuum of those contests, across the ground, the rule will be near impossible for an umpire to adjudicate.

One player will have to stay there on the mark.
The rule is just poorly worded.

It feels like what they wanted was to no longer give 50s for protected area and just call stand but what they worded was not that
