Non Lions Discussion 2019

The St. Kilda bloke lacks awareness & therefore is a danger to himself & his team mates. I believe he simply not suited to Aussie Rules.
For mine Brown was pussyfooting around this point, therefor what he said simply came out wrong. I certainly got the impression from Brown he believes the bloke is in the wrong sport.

Hasn't everyone had a great bloke in their side who hit contests like a Kamikaze Pilot, no awareness, always gets injured & is the teams "most likely" to seriously injure a team mate?

Didn't seem kamikaze in this latest one and haven't looked at the previous ones but that's a common trait in players with multiple concussions.

I think the current discussion should be/is if you are getting concussed easily and/or often it is highly likely there is underlying accumulative damage and it looks like that damage can have significant negative impact later in life.

No player wants to retire through injury and invisible injuries like brain damage are much harder to accept. The retirements I've heard about are when the player makes the decision with medical advice, but if a player doesn't take that advice and they appear ok the clubs will play them. I imagine at some point the AFL will face duty of care pressure and will need to do more in this his area. Maybe set up a independent specialist panel of medical experts that players are referred to when they have had multpile concussions. Bit like return to work assessments that happen when you have been off work on workers compensation. The players doctors provide reports but the workers comp doctors make the final recommendations which can include not to return to work. There are already protocols for financial benefits with injury forced retirements.

McCartin was a gun forward at junior level. Shows the difference between the two if he only started getting concussed at AFL level.

That point may be when health insurer's stop treating it as an injury & refuse to cover the loss? My understanding is that you can't insure what is not yours. Anyone know the health & income insurance set up for the players?

i dont think concussions are the only thing holding PAddy back

First photo is fake.

If the second photo is real, it's none too flattering. For a Saints fan it would be a worry that so many players are behind him on the run 😱
Then again, the photo may have been taken just as the boys were about to lap him 🤣

ps: just mucking around, no offence ..... I'm sure the McCartin's have a sense of humour 😉

There was a photo in the pre-season with Rayner ahead of everyone ;)

I think Jono Brown would be well aware of the seriousness of concussion issues given his history.

When he was saying they would have kept on playing in his day I didn't think he was meaning that they were more courageous/tougher than today's players, IMO he was alluding to the fact that in hindsight they were "dumb" and not as well educated on head trauma so they would keep playing.

Maybe they were suffering from toxic masculinity back in the day.

Correct, he was basically saying concussion back then and now are a bit different. They are much more cautious and aware of it. Back then they kept playing, probably copped 1 or 2 more knocks making it worse.

The bloke has had like 8 concussions, but seems to bounce back ok. Has to be a case by case thing. I dont think he is in danger of retirement, but he does have to ask himself the question of what can he do the minimise the risk, as he seems predisposed to it.

JB aint the best at articulating, but i think it is an over reaction to reading something the wrong way, certainly not helped by selected quotes in writing.

Have you seen video of the the incident that caused McCartin's latest concussion?

I'm not medically trained, and I have no idea how McCartin recovers from each concussion, but as a concerned fan thinking of the welfare of a player, there's not a chance I would let McCartin back on the field.

It was a standard contest in the forward 50 with 4 or 5 blokes going for the ball that probably occurs 20 times a game. McCartin copped what looked like a minor, glancing knock to the head. It wasn't a big hit, or to an area of the head that someone would normally think causes a concussion.

My purely uneducated opinion is that it looks like McCartin is susceptible to concussion from knocks that are very common in the game of football and not of the severity or force that a normal person usually associates with a knock or hit that causes concussion.

I think McCartin has admitted that he at least contemplated retirement last year. I agree with briztoon, there wasn't much in that contest that wouldn't occur to a key forward probably every game he plays. I would think retirement is a very real prospect which is very sad for him. Just because he has appeared to recover from these incidents doesn't mean he won't be suffering long term damage. He needs to consider the rest of his life, of which playing football will be a very small part.

Yeah i saw it, looked like nothing. In saying that, i dont think he is the type to retire. Impossible to know what impact it has, he could legit have 8 concussions and be fine, some people have 1 and have headaches for life. Case by case and im sure they will make the right decision.

I imagine every club has something similar internally.

Tom was winking at the fact that the Lions did something very similar a few years back.

Relentless, United, Respectful. *cringe*

If I recall correctly, according to our “blueprint” we were meant (as of last year) to be a genuine premiership caliber side, be fully up and running at Springfield, profitable and have 50 percent of our list comprising academy players.

Oops.

I think we were supposed to do that by 2016 lol. I'd check but I'm certain that the document no longer appears on the Lions website.

There is nothing wrong with any of the sentiments expressed in Carlton's thing per se, its just exactly the sort of thing you put out when you have been struggling for a few years to give the appearance of forward momentum.

I think you are right about 2016. Hehe. Go Angus Go!
