Essendons structure is awful, one kick and Hawthorn is through for a clean non pressured kick inside 50. This says more about Essendons lack of structure than anything.

I feel like Essendon’s system and current capacity is playing right into hawthorns hands.

It's very early in the year.

There are going to be many misjudgements over the next month or so as to how the year's going to pan out.

The only observation so far is that it's a big advantage to have a top pressure AFL game under your belt coming up against a team having its first outing.

Doesn't mean you won't win if you're in the latter category ,but you'll win by less.

What he did seemed like the most rational thing to do.

He was under pressure.

Do we now have prior opportunity for everything ?
My understanding of the rule is if you are within the distance of the goal square to the goal line and under immediate pressure you are allowed to rush it through for a behind. But apparently not…

The AFL will have to acknowledge that was the wrong decision. The rule is pressure within 9m. Otherwise everyones confused...

I imagine clubs are already on the phone/email to the AFL about this for the rest of the weekend.

He had an option to handball to, looked at him, and chose to go over the line. Good call.

Well firstly he didn't immediately choose to go over the line , he had a think.

Secondly if the option to handball is pretty much hopeless aren't you allowed to go over the line inside the goal square if the opposition is close enough.

Maybe I don't understand the rule.

You always have the option to do something else when you have the ball other than take it over the line.

Just on that.

Hawthorn are gonna win the flag. Their kicking is absolutely sublime.

Rumour out there that Luke Jackson's misses had a public argument on her FB page with some Jackson's family this morning, and then some of Jackson's "ex" mates jumped in. There are some screen shots of the since deleted argument around.

Jackson back to Melbourne may be more on than has been discussed so far.

18.11 DELIBERATE RUSHED BEHINDS
18.11.1 Spirit and Intention Players shall be encouraged to keep the football in play.
18.11.2 Free Kicks - Deliberate Rushed Behinds A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player from the Defending Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or forces the football over the Attacking Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of the Attacking Team’s Goal Posts, and the Player:
(a) is greater than nine metres from the Goal Line or Behind Line;
(b) is not under immediate physical pressure;
(c) has had time and space to dispose of the football; or
(d) from a Ruck contest, hits the football over the Goal Line or Behind Line on the full.

The "or" means that you only need to satisfy one of those four criteria to have a free kick paid against you. He satisfied item (c) and so the free kick was paid.
