It's mandated now with the bye, do away with the bye rounds and let the clubs decide. I just like the idea.

It could be tweaked. eg.
1st-2nd year players- 3 games off.
3rd-6th year players- 2 games off.
The rest- no mandated games off.
The problem with something like this is you're assuming time away is helpful. Mental illness effects all people differently. Some players might struggle when there is no football on the weekend. There hard times might be byes/injuries/off-season.

The most important thing is for clubs to have the right staff onhand. And my understanding is any psychologist/ psychiatrist payment comes under the soft cap. The most basic change would be to have unlimited spend on player welfare. Cos old school thinking will be we don't need to waste the soft cap on a problem we don't have / can't see

So long as the psychologist isn't out taking kicking drills, there wouldn't really be a huge advantage to having 20 psychologists on staff, you only need as much as is getting used. Therefore it wont be abused & it should be fairly easy to monitor. So i dont see how anyone can have an issue with it.

So Steven May re-signed with Gold Coast and Lever is inching closer to re-signing with the Crows.

You get the feeling that AFL journos here in Melbourne are frustrated, not to mention disappointed at the lack of players leaving non-Victorian clubs for Victorian clubs.

Prince James still can't make Collingwood's side (or emergencies).

His career really is floundering if he can't even make Collingwood's side.

They've started on Rockliff now....heard them today on SEN discussing which team would be a good fit for him etc. Then said doubt he'll leave Lions.

Change of coach might be the thing that saves him for a while in that a few fringe players might get an extra year before the cull begins. Though really can't see him being able to salvage his career in that team: way too many players ahead of him in the midfield and he doesn't have any significant strengths that make him a more valuable inclusion.

Fortitude Valley Diehards. Chelsea.
West Coast Eagles are my second favourite team this weekend, I'm not very loyal to my second team though, lets hope the Weagles can live up to what my second team from last weekend did ie. Richmond Tigers.

Its funny that they rarely, if ever, discuss or hypothesise about a Melbourne based player leaving for another Melbourne based club. Sure Dustin Martin has been mentioned, but articles aren't written listing the pros and cons for every other club in the comp acquiring Martin like there has been for May, Lever and Schache.

I understand the frustration at the Vic centric media but at the end of the day there's 10 clubs there and that is where the game originated from. Over half the teams are in Victoria of course the media is going to be vic centric, heck I'm sure if we could get our hands on some stats about who consumes the most footy media it'd probably be the Vics, that place is on another level crazy about footy.

Yeah it's frustrating/annoying but these guys just want clicks and listens and likes. They start banging on about lever going to QLD and only the die hards on here would really care. But Victoria? Of course it's gonna generate a billion times more traffic.

I agree that the grey area makes the red card difficult because it's such a big penalty but surely for off the ball incidents someone could quickly analyse the video footage and make a call. Perhaps at the end of the quarter.

The threat of a red card will help to reduce the incidents as well.
I think it's a good idea, and I think it should be adjudicated off-field (otherwise you get soccer-type staging, and bad ref calls). I don't think it's about deterrent - you'd only use it on occasions you'd get suspended anyway... I think it's about levelling the playing field. If you injure your opposition while doing something wrong, your team shouldn't get an extra man for the rest of the game.

It's a shame some people in the media are obscuring the debate by saying idiotic stuff like "imagine if you had to play with 17 on the field because the opposition took a dive".

They seem to think it's identical to a soccer red card. Obviously in reality the team gets to keep 18 on the field, just the infringing player is done for the day, limiting their team's interchange to 3, just like the other team has had to cop.

I still think it's reacting to a problem that doesn't exist.

The issue Will be if they do ever use it, the incident will be similar to another where they don't use the card. Or someone implementing the red card for no good reason.

It is reactionary but I think it would be stupid not to learn from what happened. If there was a red card system that would have seen Bugg sent off I don't think anyone would have an issue with it. It just has to happen for the next time. Even if it doesn't happen again for 5 years.

Absolutely. Not sure if you were responding to me or just generally commenting, but I completely agree. Playing with 3 on the bench is an unfair disadvantage if you are the victims. Cutting to three each is reasonable in extreme cases (eg. bugg).
