And so we roll onto the season proper, the real start of the footy season, the traditional opening Thursday night Victorian blockbuster, the clash of the behemoths,erm................ Richmond and Carlton.

It still annoys me that they got away with having the season opener for so long. It's always such a dull game.

As rubbish as sides have been it's been a quality and close game every year. Now I preface by saying this, Richmond look beyond bad this year but I can't even remember the last thrashing in this game

Wasn't the margin like 12 points last year? Richmond came dead last. Weirdly it's easier for a young side in r1 than lets say round 10-12 where bodies are tired etc.

5 points, yeah. Was a tight game. It's possibly boring because it's the same two teams, but there's plenty of other marquee slots that are the same two teams (Cats v Hawks, Pies v Dees, etc.) that isn't an issue.

There we go even closer. It may be a bit bigger this year but I expect Richmond to compete for 3/4, not as if Carlton are some great side and no Curnow there helps. The Pies vs Dees has been way worse in terms of blowouts

I admit I haven't even watched the game in like 5 years but I just find both teams dull, and even if it is a close game, it doesn't change the fact that Carlton haven't been contenders in 30 years, Richmond are on their way down and their 'rivalry' hasn't existed since the early 1970s.

As much as I don't like the Collingwood and Essendon monopoly on Anzac Day, at the very least I always find the matchup interesting.

In fact, I'm not particularly fond of any fixed games. They should just reduce the season to 18 games or extend the season to 34 and just draw the games randomly.

Love how fox footy during play have a banner that covers half the screen and then at qtr time with ads it's perfect size and in a corner where it should be. They need to do something's about that crud during play
