I don’t get it. I’ve been here just recently (for a wedding) and I don’t understand the attraction. It’s grossly overrated. It’s a commercialised hot spot attracting rich and wealthy Melbourne and Sydney types who want all the conveniences of a sanitised clean holiday. There’s nothing holiday about it when you walk down the main drag to see a Gazman store, Just Jeans, and various other retail outlets that would occupy space at Chadstone or your local shopping precinct.

Talking to locals earlier, they all say that it’s money from the south invested up here to exploit the commercial aspect, to look after the southern tourists. But why would you want to go on holiday and see the same thing as home? It’s expensive, busy, snooty, and literally a hang out for Melbourne and Sydney people who want to go on holiday to see the same people!

The beaches aren’t bad, but again, packed with restaurant fronts looking out on to them. In my opinion that doesn’t serve as a holiday, it’s just transferring a heap of wealthy types up north and giving them a beach and the same same.

Anyone else got other experiences like this in QLD or any other state?

I like a 'sanitised clean holiday' myself. I love going up there to escape the rubbish VIC weather.

Then again, I'd have the opposite problem to yourself with places like Bali, Thailand, etc. Each to their own.

Spent a lot of my late teens early 20s in the Noosa, Sunshine Beach area on weekends with a group of mates, late 1970s.... those were the pristine halcyon days of the Sunshine Coast.

Likewise, but late 80's for me.
Plenty of drunken nights spent at the Reef Resort nightclub and days surfing at Tea Tree and Granite Bay

The exact reason I don't see the fascination in going to places like Bali or Hawaii for holidays. I'd rather see something different when I go overseas. The Sunshine Coast is a bit overrated. I would recommend people visit North, or even Central Queensland before the Sunny Coast. But the Sunny Coast is better than the Gold Coast. I hate that place.

Bali stinks. I couldn't give a s**t about that place.

All this nonsense about shopping is exactly that anyway. Nonsense. You can get what you want on the net ffs.

I kind of agree about Noosa itself - but the Sunny Coast more generally is a pretty magic time to be around July/August when you live in Melbourne.

Yep. Mum and Dad used to own a holiday place at Sunshine Beach, just south of Noosa. We used to love going up there when the kids were young.

One time in July, I went down to the beach for a swim. No-one else was in the water as the locals thought it was too cold. Just me between the flags being watched by three lifeguards.

Plenty of other stuff to do there too: Eumundi Markets, Steve Irwin's croc zoo, tapas and beer by the river, a day trip to Fraser Island...

They sold the place about ten years back, it was great while it lasted.
