This seems... odd.

Look, they played two grand finals in three years, 50 years ago. That's it.
The two clubs played in 12 finals including three Grand Finals from 1974-83. That was some rivalry. There are no two clubs today that have had anything like that. Hawthorn and Essendon claim a rivalry despite the fact these clubs have played one final in 37 years. How anyone under the age of 50 could relate to this alleged rivalry is beyond me. For 58 years neither Hawthorn or Essendon cared two hoots about each other before a brief period of about 6 years when they played 6 finals ( three GFs) and we were suddenly eternal enemies. Since the second semi of 1989 we have played one meaningful game, the 2001 Prelim which is now 25 years ago.

There was a bit more to it than that in the 70’s.
Between 1974 and 1978 the two clubs met in two finals each season, and played in 3 Grand Finals and 2 Prelims ( in the old final 5 system when there was only 1 Prelim each year).
So it would have been a very intense rivalry at that time.
That said, I do agree there is no rivalry now.

If it weren't for the Line in the Sand game, I doubt that anyone at Hawthorn or Essendon would really care for it.

The interesting thing about the 1976 GF was North Melbourne were chock full of interstate recruits Blight, Cable, Sutton, etc, as well as players secured through the 10 years rule. Hawthorn had Rodney Eade recruited from Tasmania as a junior, and Ian Bremner who couldn't get a game with Collingwood. The rest were home grown.

I also recall Ron Barassi complaining that North Melbourne had been the better team all year, but they'd played each other 4 times, Hawks winning them all :)

10 yr players in Davis & Wade retired after the 1975 G.F. and Rantall had returned to South Melbourne. So no, no 10 yr players in that game.

Keith Greig dual brownlow medallist knocked out twice by Leigh Matthews, one the typical snipe to the head with a clenched fist early in the game.
