For a club that has such an aggressive, forward-thinking administration and a team playing to an exciting, attacking gameplan; geez, its supporters are a defensive bunch!

I don't want to be pedantic Roger but this is a bit of a bug bear of mine. Irony has to be stated or written,it is where the literal meaning is opposite to the intended meaning (eg ironical cheer). I think you mean paradox.

I don't blame the Roo fans for being defensive at times, coz no one gives them a bloody break!!!!!! Instead of dreaming up things that are wrong with the Kangas, why not worry about your own club. You can all sit around and laugh at the ones who are doing the worst financially, then turn around one day and it's your club. WAKE UP.

Both Groucho and Roger are both correct!

There is more than one meaning to the word 'irony'.

The following is from the Webster's dictionary:

2 a : the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning b : a usually humorous or sardonic literary style or form characterized by irony c : an ironic expression or utterance

3 a (1) : incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result (2) : an event or result marked by such incongruity b : incongruity between a situation developed in a drama and the accompanying words or actions that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play -- called also dramatic irony, tragic irony

The situation Roger cites falls under the definition of 3, whereas Groucho's example relates to 2.

To describe Rogers example as a paradox would also be correct.

Also from Webster's Dictionary

2 a : a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true b : a self-contradictory statement that at first seems true c : an argument that apparently derives self-contradictory conclusions by valid deduction from acceptable premises

so it would be more like joffa asking people where their team was playing beyond the round robin of the ansett cup only to have his team end up in newcastle
