Which is perfectly within the rights of the AFL in accordance to their rules.

If the people involved don't make themselves available then they are not following the rules.

The smart thing would have been for the players and staff involved to advise the AFL and advise the club and have the club to consult with the AFL or advise them on actions.

From the AFL's perspective, they have a right to investigate with complete cooperation and without hindrance. They did not receive this. Simple as that.

You might find that unreasonable but your club operates in this environment and knows the rules. Perhaps they didn't convey this properly with their players and staff.
No, I think you are just taking the side to be augmentative. This would have been nothing if there wasn't comments in the media during the process from the club. I am sure the AFL would come down like a ton of bricks on everyone at the MFC who lied to the AFL by making false and misleading statements.

AFL administration is just a petty group of people, if you make them look bad in public they will come after you. Hawthorn's is also finding out the price of Kennett's mouth, lasting long after he has left the building.

I thought the fine was probably reasonable for the way that the club did not fully cooperate. Fair whack.
I haven't really been following this much, if at all, so I can't comment on whether North co-operated or not.

If they indeed didn't do so fully, then perhaps a slap on the wrist may have been in order.

$20,000 though? Seems a bit steep.

$10k of that is suspended, but still steep considering the penalty if we were actually guilty was $20k anyway.

Bit steep for Lindy Chamberlin to spend 3 years in jail for doing nothing wrong.

It is still pretty harsh. Most clubs get annoyed by the AFL's constant scrutiny and pretentiousness. It would no doubt be frustrating if a club knows they have done nothing wrong but still have to deal with the bad press and annoyance that comes with an AFL investigation.

If it had been shown that North had actually jeopardised Hansen's health by playing him concussed, then I wouldn't have sympathy. But, no such thing was proven.

However, they are being fined for apparently not co-operating fully- now as I said, I don't know the nitty gritty enough to comment on whether I think that is justified or not. But, the bit that strikes me as ironic is that the AFL has frequently been less than transparent itself on several issues across the spectrum, but without recourse because they are, of course, accountable to no one.

Yet North are a little slow on a few things, perhaps a little less than fully co-operative, and the penalty is $20k?

It just strikes me as slightly double standard-ish.

What happens if Melbourne don't fully co-operate in the tanking investigation or the Crows with Tippett. No way will either team fully co-operate as they will be in massive trouble. Going on scale they will be fined millions.

Important difference there, though.

Melbourne especially and quite possibly Adelaide too, are likely to be hit with substantial fines for serious trangressions. The AFL might well say that those fines alone, being large, are enough by themselves without rubbing salt into the wound.

The fine for North, on the other hand, is seemingly for pissing off the AFL- nothing more or less.

Moral of the story is, don't piss off the fat Greek.

Agree completely- but the AFL operates on a not too dissimilar model in terms of the lack of accountability.

Don't get me wrong, I think North have been treated harshly here.
Yeah I know you agree. If we sent him out concussed then 20k is fair and we need to look after our players. If the fools at the AFL could not prove it then that is the end of the case.

$20,000 might sound a lot, and it appears that the fine was laid on the basis of administrative aspects rather than the issue at the heart of the matter, however the AFL need to be pretty brutal where it comes to issues regarding concussion. They can see things are possibly going to get pretty bad vis-a-vis litigation in relation to concussion. If they, and the clubs, can maintain a squeeky clean approach, then everybody will be better off. Part of that is coming down hard on even the smallest of transgressions.

When a club drags its heels during an investigation and otherwise acts unprofessionally, a fine is warranted. When an AFL official drags his heels during an investigation and otherwise acts unprofessionally, his name is Adrian Anderson.

Don't understand why the AFL would try to bankrupt a club over this. Guess this really is becoming personal for not moving to the Gold Coast.

This is more about the AFL needing to be seen to be tough on concussion stuff in any case. It is part of a wider campaign the AFL will be running to prepare the ground for very tough rules, that clubs will not like, re concussion and players going back on, the league will introduce to cover itself legally, and fair enough too.

If you intentionally lie in an investigation on tanking or salary cap cheating you are going to light up the offences like a christmas tree.
