The 77 GF was great for the fact that the first game was a real nailbighter. The 96 GF was great because I live in Sydney now and I got to stick it up Swans fans (and still do!). The 99 was great after the dissapointing way we lost the 98 GF.

The I voted purely because 75 was the first flag for us. It was the most emotional flag we've won. The memory of most North supporters crying with relief that we had won will stick with me until I die. The great Arnold Briedis' last quarter was one of the most memorable displays by a player under pressure I have ever seen. It was a great day.

1975 and 1977 were before my time as a football supporter.

I voted for 1996 because of the consistent way in which we went about things that year. After the revived team burst onto the scene in 1993 and bowed out of the finals quick smart, and after the 1994 disappointment at the hands of a violent, cheating, co.ckeyed, hunchbacked, drug-riddled "champion" of the game who had got nowhere near the ball all day, there was something special about 1996 right from the start of the year. It was an unusual feeling for me, having the club experience success, because in the 1980s when we occasionally made the finals, we didn't last very long and were never a realistic chance to win a flag.

After 15 years of supporting the Roos, having put up with merger talks, takeover attempts, a horribly high attrition rate to players in the late 1980s, and very few star players standing out in that period, it was very satisfying to see the cup held aloft at the end by a young bloke from Wagga Wagga who would make a name for himself as pobably the greatest player the game has ever seen. It was made even sweeter by the fact that the AFL, through its member clubs, scuttled our bid for long-term financial security by blocking the merger attempt with Fitzroy.

I wonder why '99 is coming last?:)

Probably because it was expected of us to win another flag with our powerful team in the late 90s. 1998 was the one that got away, so 1999 was very satisfying in that we redeemed ourselves for the previous year's disappointment. It wasn't accompanied by a long drought like the 1996 Flag or the 1975 Flag. Most of our posters would have been either very young, or not born in 1975, so presumably 1996 would be the one most people would pick.

No, I think Hawthorn are your greatest rival, actually. Wrong again

Really Dim????

Rooboy,

I guarantee you that "most" North supporters would have felt even worse in 1994, if it was Carlton that beat you with a goal after the siren instead of Geelong. After all, wasn't it revealed last year in the Herald-Sun that Carlton were North's most hated team?

Each individual person is en***led to their own opinion, but OVERALL, if you asked thousands of people, Ess vs Carl is a far bigger rivalry than North vs Gee. There is no comparison. Yes, you can have your own opinion, but more people are of the opinion that Ess v Carl is bigger. Your opinion that North vs Gee is the biggest rivalry in football  is not necessariy shared by your fellow Roos supporters, who I'm guessing would enjoy beating Carlton more than Geelong (and hence would hurt more if they lost to the Blues after the siren)

Therefore, losing to your most traditional rival (as Essendon did in '99), makes it more heartbreaking than North losing to a "sort of" rival in 1994.

Back Flip Kid at work again....

I never said that Carlton were your biggest rival. I said it was revealed in the Herald-Sun that most North fans despise Carlton the most. You have just proved that you are incapable of understanding basic comprehnesion. You know, the type you learn in year 7.

Personally, I think Hawthorn is North's greatest rival.

Get your facts right before you post useless and pointless quotes.

All that means Pooboy, is that North supporters "generally" hate Carlton more than Geelong. Therefore, an after the siren loss to the Blue-boys would be worse, i'd imagine, than an after the siren loss to the Cats.

Wouldn't you agree?

P.S What that has to do with "who your greatest rival is" is beyond me. How can you go past the Hawks. You have played the Hawks in more head-to-head matches than any other club, more finals matches, and more Grand Finals (3), including your first win in '75. There was the extra-time final in '94 and don't forget last years final too.

Dan

You have no idea on North Melbourne and Geelong. In the 70s, we did have a big rivalry with Hawthorn, but that has faded since then.

In the 90s, there was a series of closely fought games between North and Geelong, the '94 preliminary final, the '96 and '98 finals series where we eliminated Geelong, the number of players that have switched clubs, and the issue of Leigh Colbert....so there have been plenty of things that the clubs have done to needle the other club's fans. In regards to Hawthorn in the 90s, there has been little reason for us to hate them and for them to hate us.

Right now, if North's next two games were against Geelong and Hawthorn and we were only allowed to win one of them, I'd take the win against Geelong.

Yes, I DO have an idea. I have lived throughout the 90s so I have a fair idea of North Melbourne vs Geelong.

One thing that really annoys me is when people say: "You barrack for Essendon, so you have no idea about Carl vs Coll or North vs Haw"

What a load of rubbish!

I don't need to barrack for the LA Lakers to know that they hate the Boston Celtics. Look at someone like Mags. He is a 16-year old Magpie fan, who has never seen a Carl-Coll Grand Final. He hasn't "experienced" the growth of the Carl-Coll rivalry, but he knows they are rivals, because he has "learnt."

I TOTALLY understand the hatred between Collingwood and Carlton, even though I am a Bombers fan. it's pretty simple really. They have both been "up" for the best part of 100 years, and have played each other in 6 Grand Finals with the Blues winning the last 5. The Magpies, therefore, hate their guts. Do I need to be a Pies or Blues fan to understand the rivalry? Of course not!

Similarly, I am aware that Geelong and North Melbourne have been involved in some great clashes in the 90s. But as to whether these matches (say half a dozen) make Geelong the Kangaroos biggest rival, is highly debatable.

Only problem Dan is that you don't go and see all the North Melbourne games and see the reactions of North fans to the other clubs.

Darky, Rooboy96, and myself go and sit among our fellow Roo fans and watch our boys play week in and week out, so you'd think that we'd have a far better idea of who North fans consider to be our rivals than what you do.

Yes, I know that. Point taken. But I support the "game" in general too, and attend 30-plus games a year. I pride myself on understanding the game, its p***ions and history. I don't believe it is essential for me attend every North match to know who their greatest rivals are. It's an opinion, thing anyway, right?

You're a ManU supporter, right? Well, you have never been to a game (I'm guessing) so how do you understand the rivalries they must have? See what I'm saying? You KNOW the rivalries your favourite soccer team has, and you don't need to go to the games to know it.

And Darky, I never presumed to tell you what you were thinking.

My memory of the 75 flag will always be 'special'. North has reached greatness at times. Size is not always important. I am happy with Australia as opposed with America and equally as happy with the Kangas as opposed with Essendon.

Because we got smashed by sydney at optus oval I would go for 96 and because I didn't see the first 2. Any flag we win is a good one anyway

Well, I have seen Manchester United play at Old Trafford, but that's beside the point.

The comparison between understanding United's rivalries and North Melbourne's is not a valid one. There is plenty of writings by United fans (whether by books or websites) that make it quite clear on where they direct their hostilities to. In respect to North Melbourne and our rivalries, there is nowhere near that amount of public information. All you are doing is speculating and forming an opinion from your experiences of North Melbourne's matches. But the fact remains that North Melbourne fans have first hand knowledge of how we react to other clubs, and hence, people like Darky and Rooboy96 are far more qualified to make an opinion on North Melbourne's rivalries than you are. So, the opinion of Darky and Rooboy96 is likely to be far closer to the truth than your's. You might be right on this issue, but I doubt it.

Shinboners,

Well, I will back my knowledge of footy history (all clubs) and my understanding of the game on this one. I respect everyone elses understanding too, but I aso have faith in my understanding of the history of the VFL-AFL.

Someone like Mike Sheahan (silly example I know) is a Demons fan, but he reckons he has been to 40 Carl vs Coll matches. Would you question his understanding of that rivalry? I certainly wouldn't.

I'm not questioning your knowledge of the Roos' rivalries (or Darky's for that matter). After all, you have first hand experience. But I feel, you are putting me down, implying that I wouldn't know, which simply is not true. Believe it or not, I know the Roos history very, very well, even from their VFA days. They used to have a lot in common with Essendon.

Dan

You simply have ignored my key point. People like Darky, Rooboy96, and myself attend far more North Melbourne matches and functions than you do. So, how can you say that your opinions on the club and its culture are likely to be closer to the truth than those made by people like Darky, Rooboy96, and myself?

You can read as many newspapers and books as you like, but the fact remains that we are the ones immersed in the club, we are the ones that are closer to it, and we are the ones that are more likely to come up with comments about the clubs culture that are more likely to be close to the truth of the matter than what you are able to make. I am not saying that we are right and you are wrong, all I am saying is that we are more likely to be right than you.

Now you're being subjective.

I can't argue that my opinions/understandings about other clubs (who I don't support) are likely to be closer to the truth than yours (in this case North's). That's fair enough. Nevertheless, I am comforatable with my understanding of the North Melbourne Football club, their culture, intracacies and their place in the VFL and now AFL.

Sh*t, you;d think I was a 'Roos supporter. Get me outta here!!! :D :D
