North Melbourne and the 1990's

Sydney were always Jekyll and Hyde.
They barely scraped past Hawthorn and Essendon in their two finals leading upto the big dance so it was very unconvincing.
The years prior to their 'break-out' season in 1996, they were a bottom of the ladder team. After 1996, they played in finals for the next three seasons and only won a single game during that time.

You have to admit, North Melbourne could not have faced a much easier opponent than them in a grand final. It's the equivalent of facing the modern day Geelong in a grand final.
Inconsistent and mentally weak.
rubbish.

Sydney finished top of the table and as some have already mentiond smashed the Roos in Melbourne during the home and away season. Who cares about their close finals wins, that's football. Conversely North smashed their opponents including a great Brisbane outfit, who also beat the roos in melbourne during the home and away season. Brisbane finished 3rd that year and were a great team.

You can mention what sides did the year before but that's a bs arument as many teams have jumped up the ladder in the space of one season, us in 2007 a prime example. Adelaide and the Saints in the season we're talking about didn't play finals, yet both played off in the Granny the next year, with the doggies also joining them.

North were a great side in 96 just like 99 and deserved their prems. Can't blame the '' shithouse '' Blues for beating the Dons who '' would '' have beaten the Roos. That speaks for itself. In any case Essendon were a magnificent side who just ran into a red hot Carlton outfit on the day.

Sorry son but go watch the games. And please don't quote Mike Sheahan ;)

For a bloke regarded as the greatest, he never delivered in a grand final but he did not need to, North Melbourne played 2 pretty weak teams during that period of time.
I would of thought that 22 posies and 9 marks in 96 is a reasonable return for a key forward. His direct opponent got 7 posies. If it wasn’t Carey it would have have judged as a great game.

lol, absolute crap mate and you know it!
Sydney and Carlton of 1999 were poor grand finalists by any measure. Adelaide were the one decent team they faced and look at how that one panned out.

I mean seriously, look at Sydney's midfield, all they had was Kelly and Creswell. It gets even barer up forward, Tony Lockett and who?

Don't try re-writing history, https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/historical-grand-final-betting-odds.1229299/
North were $1.30 & $1.25 betting favourites against those two poor grand finalists in Carlton and Sydney.

I watched the 99 grand final yesterday.

Was Carey carrying an injury? he looked a little heavy and slow.

* Prelims in 2014 and 2015, started 2016 on fire but got destroyed in the first week of the finals in Adelaide. Just missed the 8 in 2018 and 2 games out of it in 2019. Horror season this time around and some key departures but people make out like this club is Fitzroy and has been wooden spooners for 10 years straight.

Whatever. North Melbourne and the 1990's. Still the best ham n cheese sandwich going around.

love that old 1990's 7 preview before the footy. Love the guy who did the pre-intro for the game too
