All I asked was for you to elaborate Mr. Rolley Eyes.

While you are right in a sense, it's more about why they have this hatred for us.

I would like a rivalry to be honest, but one that's on the field with our players smashing each other in contests (legally) rather than derailing every North/Ess thread with crap.

haha relax, the rolley eyes were intended for the premise of the thread, not for you asking to elaborate.

A thread about North Melbourne supporters and how we don't care about them, yet we care enough to create a thread about them
Well you're a bit off on that account.

Discussing them hardly makes them a rival, especially when the context of discussion is trying to figure out why they are fascinated with us.

They are our actual traditional rivals.

Have a read of our respective histories on Wikipedia for a start it is very interesting start for both clubs. It seems to have much more to it than a rivalry based on a few GF in the 80s and Dermie's media presence.

They are a piss ant club because we made them that way. I understand why they hate us so much. I will say, though, that they are generally the worst posters on these boards.

Yes, but I still couldn't give a toss about North Melbourne except for the weeks we are playing them.

Their entry into the league, to them, might have been some sort of years long titanic struggle, against adversity, and a triumph.

For us, it was Tuesday. Completely irrelevant.

I don't know it wouldn't have played out that way.

Surely we wanted to beat them up, you know, to show them who was boss.

The Hawthorn one is mostly bullshit.

The Carlton one, within this league, which is what I'm interested in, is fairly chequered.

The North thing is, yeah, more about what we did to them than anything. It's not really reciprocated in kind to any degree of significance, unless you count Barry Davis and marshmallows.

Carlton seems to be the most ingrained and reciprocated rivalry. Not sure where it came from though. It seems that recently it is more about a few games and I'm not aware of any other period of time when the two clubs were at each others throats (like EFC vs Hawthorn in the 80s).

I think it is probably always the case that the smaller, less successful side probably holds onto the rivalry more. We've got bigger fish to fry and North, unfortunately, tends to struggle for league wide relevance. It is only natural that they define themselves (to an extent) by the rivalry with us. We can always call on "rivalries" with Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond because of our historical status as the big 4 Victorian clubs and then there is Hawthorn and maybe even West Coast for more contemporary clashes.

Like our success in general, it doesn't have a specific timeframe where it was at its height as far as I can recall, but it pops up now and then.

You need only look at a few of the GF results between the clubs. We classically pump them (49, 62, 93), whereas they are continually trollin' us with very lose victories (08, 47, 68).

And of course the Caspar incident is on a '99 prelim level.

I almost believe that rivalry is no longer a word that can be used in football. You rarely hear players or coaches come out and say anything like 'We really want to beat these guys'. Everything is so cushy and PC these days, it's bollocks. The AFL will lose (some) fans to harsher sports, I reckon. I know I don't get the same fix these days from most home and away matches. You used to be able to switch on the tv on a weekend, enjoy the fierce brutality of two teams fighting for a win. Sheeds was right; it is becoming basketball-esque. The flow-on effect is that the raw energy of the past is diminished.

Maybe rivalries are alive and well, but you sure don't see the individual acts of heroism/hatred that prove it. Without that, it's just a grudge.

Seems like it is simply the battle for absolute supremacy.

He can say whatever he likes; it don't change how I feel about certain clubs. There's no "official company line here."

I could ask Hird as well and get a totally different answer. Y'know, the guy who's a third generation Essendon player.

So what one of your club legends says about the rivalry has no bearing on whether or not it is a one-way rivalry?

How I feel about a club is more strongly shaped by my opinion and those of my father probably, rather than people within the club I support.

I don't think that's completely absurd.

What was James Hird's comment this year, when asked about North's rivalary with us?

"For them that's great."

As for this thread.. well.. you're just giving the little shits exactly what they want.

Do you think DoS hopes we allow him to go about his trolling without reaction? No

What he wants is a reaction from Essendon supporters, to give him a feeling of vindication.
