What was James Hird's comment this year, when asked about North's rivalary with us?

"For them that's great."

As for this thread.. well.. you're just giving the little shits exactly what they want.

Do you think DoS hopes we allow him to go about his trolling without reaction? No

What he wants is a reaction from Essendon supporters, to give him a feeling of vindication.

Just don't look! Just don't look!

So what one of your club legends says about the rivalry has no bearing on whether or not it is a one-way rivalry?

Okey Tim.
James Hird, our greatest living player and current senior coach:

In contrast, Hird said the rivalry meant plenty in his playing days, when both were near the top of the ladder, but not so much now.
"For them that's great," Hird said.

"For us, we're about winning round one and defining who we are this year and hopefully building through the season."

Lets be perfectly clear here. The rivalry is one sided, because I, along with most Essendon supporters couldn't give a shit about North Melbourne.

You're an insignificant speck of a club, whose existence is entirely owed to the AFL and it's desire to maintain an eighteen team competition. You are a filler, an opponent to have when we aren't playing real clubs like Carlton or Hawthorn. If you get shipped off to the Gold Coast, or Tassie, or Darwin nobody other than the laughably small supporter base you have will care.

I already can't wait to get a hold of Carlton next year, or see Goddard on Anzac Day. Your blokes? I barely even know you exist when we aren't playing you.

Carlton seems to be the most ingrained and reciprocated rivalry. Not sure where it came from though. It seems that recently it is more about a few games and I'm not aware of any other period of time when the two clubs were at each others throats (like EFC vs Hawthorn in the 80s).

I think it is probably always the case that the smaller, less successful side probably holds onto the rivalry more. We've got bigger fish to fry and North, unfortunately, tends to struggle for league wide relevance. It is only natural that they define themselves (to an extent) by the rivalry with us. We can always call on "rivalries" with Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond because of our historical status as the big 4 Victorian clubs and then there is Hawthorn and maybe even West Coast for more contemporary clashes.
I think the Carlton one has grown in the last 20 years or so – 1993... 1999... 16 flags each... and we’ve been in roughly similar positions ladder and success wise over the whole period.

I think it’s always been there as two traditionally big clubs, but has grown a leg due to these factors.

Rivalries at AFL level are just supporter things these days. Nobody within the club buys into them, John Elliott was probably the last to do so.

Don't know that the players have one bit of energy left to devote to rivalries.
Ha! You're probably right. More of a gripe with the state/direction of the game, than our boys, as such.

Still, rivalry invokes ideas of empassioned play against a foe. If true rivalry exists, the players will dig that little bit deeper to get the job done against their rival.

I've always liked James Hird because his actions speak louder than words.

I don't think you need me to post THAT pic do you?

You know the one.

The one with Hirdy wearing royal blue and white stripes in his last game against us as a mark of respect?
Don't confuse respect for Glenn Archer with the Kangaroos. Very different things.

You guys could out smart, out wit and outright embarrass this knob jockey that insists on stirring you up on our board.

But you'd still be giving him what he wants, by engaging.

JUST DONT LOOK. JUST DONT LOOK.

I guarantee, you'll annoy him far more that way.

Cretins, trolls - take your pick - need oxygen.

I'm not sure why I'm bothering replying to this ridiculous thread. Its very contradictory to say the least. Someone made a thread just to tell us how insignificant North are? And the fact that its gone to three pages

I grew up in a family where half are Essendon, half are North and there are a few other Geelong & Collingwood supporters - but we don't mention them very often. We hate each other's clubs. No doubt about it. Plenty of rivalry - They used to stir us up about Carey and we would refer to Lloyd and Hird as Toydy and Turdy.... Yeah ridiculous.

I regularly attend Essendon games as my partner is Essendon supporter (To my mind I could have done so much worse, his father is a Collingwood supporter!) and unfortunately, we are both paid up members of the EFC (not before I spent double on platinum memberships at North). I'll support Essendon at every game unless its against North or somehow it affects North.

It is a disgrace to call all North supporters bigoted d**kheads based on a few drama-queens on the mainboard.

P.s. My entire family (including the Essendon, Geelong and Collingwood supporters) found it most offensive that your club sent my grandfather a letter asking to be included in his will. Presumptuous and pathetic.

The Hawthorn one is mostly bullshit.

The Carlton one, within this league, which is what I'm interested in, is fairly chequered.

The North thing is, yeah, more about what we did to them than anything. It's not really reciprocated in kind to any degree of significance, unless you count Barry Davis and marshmallows.
Just because a rivalry didn't start in 1422 doesn't mean it isn't real.

The Hawthorn rivalry is as bitter as the Collingwood one and more so than every other club except the scum.

Hang on, who exactly said anything like that? BigFooty does not equal life, and no one is claiming all North supporters are bad.

Good point... I was referring to a thread on the mainboard where some Richmond & Essendon supporters were criticising all North supporters. My mistake

Its probably the same for the Essendon board as it is for North. There are a few posters who regularly frequent the mainboard who give us all a bad reputation. I daresay the worst of them haven't seen the inside of the Essendon board for years!
