North Melbourne has made Taylor Garner unavailable for AFL selection this week following an incident at a Sydney nightspot that is being investigated by NSW Police.
The 25-year-old forward could face further sanctions from the club as it works through its investigation.
The club leadership group and interim coach Rhyce Shaw made the call after discussions over the past few days.
“We simply will not tolerate anyone who compromises team standards and expectations,” North Melbourne GM of football Cameron Joyce said.
“Taylor knows he made some poor choices on the weekend and we will continue to work with him to ensure he bounces back a better person.
“At this stage, he will play in the VFL this weekend.”
It is alleged a man’s nose was broken during the altercation and that Garner failed to tell the club about the incident.
“The club’s decision to penalise Taylor has been made independently of any police investigation or potential outcome,” Joyce said.
“After speaking with Taylor yesterday, he unreservedly apologised and has fully accepted the club’s initial stance.”
Garner has played 38 games, including four this season, since being drafted in 2012 by the Kangaroos.
