Fixture North Melbourne vs Essendon on Good Friday

I always supported the option of Good Friday games, with religious beliefs aside... but if they can play a game on ANZAC Day, Good Friday (in my eyes) would be no different. In saying that, it should never have been any of the Big 4 from Melbourne playing in this game.

North are a great choice and have been vocal for many years to secure the day. IMHO either St Kilda, Bulldogs, Demons, Carlton or Hawthorne should be in this slot.

I'd hate for the AFL to come out and say that as we have been compensated with the Easter game, that the ANZAC Day fixture can now be shared around to other clubs. It would put it past them that it's something that they'd tout.

Our game last year was probably the most entertaining of the entire season in terms of high scoring etc.

I spat out my mashed potatoes at some of the goals that were scored.

“close your eyes and pray” bahahahaha

If Carlton aren’t big four, who is?

Good pick up - change them out for University... they're always missing out on the big games.
It wasn't an error. There are only a big 3 these days. Carlton and the expansion club Hawthorn are on the rung below.

Agree 100%. North vs Dogs should have been given 5 years to see how the fixture would have grown. The first Good Friday game was a cracker. We have enough marquee games, as do the Pies, Richmond and the Blues. Give it to the clubs that struggle financially.

Using Essendon is just the AFL wanting to prop up the crowd figure to justify the whole exercise.

It really should have been a set fixture for a period of time; North have worked hard to build it, and North v Bulldogs was a genuinely enjoyable game.

No issue with them then adding a second interstate game given they wouldn't both be clashing FTA.

Two smaller Melbourne clubs, then a WA v SA team thing as the second game.

I'm not a fella to believe conspiracies, but it almost feels like the AFL is doing its best to tank the game.

Just go all in with it.

Players to wear beards, away team in white cloth, organs played for every goal, captains both change their name for the day to Jesus. Losers have to do a lap of dishonour and carry a massive crusifix around etihad

My understanding was that it gave clubs who had a low membership base the chance to expand on that and potentially build a new narrative as a result.
Unfortunately the AFL didn't account for the supporter bases lethargic attitudes. Not the clubs fault, but the supporters who supposedly back them.

Agreed. One of the most cracking contests I’ve been to in years.
Probably quoting the wrong post Doss but I agree with you that the North game was an absolute cracker this year. One of the best games for a few years as far as I am concerned.

You are spot on. I meant to quote sameolds33's post!

Yeah it was a great game. Some incredible highlights.

One of the best bits was the Norf fans afterwards, whose comaints basically boiled down to "yeah but if you hadn't played some incredible, genius footy we would have won!" were a highlight in themselves. Teffy just couldn't wrap his head around what he was actually saying

It was very nice of him to compile all of those gifs.

It's their annual Grand Final. They will go backwards next year but will be up and about for this one.

Home game on a public holiday as the sole game in that timeslot. They will be up and about only to return to their usual mediocrity the following week.

Happy for them to show up with the same gameplan next year too as they did a few months ago against us. Beat us at a high scoring shootout? Yep. OK North.
