CLUBS watched on as American prospect Mason Cox kicked off his trial for a place on an AFL list with an hour's training session at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Recruiters from North Melbourne, Collingwood, Richmond and Port Adelaide were present as the 211cm former basketball and soccer player went through a range of skill-related drills.

Kangaroos coach Brad Scott was also in attendance.

As part of his eight-day visit to Australia, Cox will spend a day at each of the four clubs as the bidding begins to gain his signature as an international rookie.

I think Cox would be younger and soccer background would mean he'll be a lot more agile than Wallace potentially.

Edit: he is 23, which is still young enough to make it. Wallace is 26 I think.

I just read up on the AFL website that clubs can recruit up to 3 'category B' rookies, which includes internationals, and which are additional to the maximum rookie allocation of 6. I can't fathom why more clubs aren't investing time into players from other backgrounds as it doesn't seem that you have to give up a spot on the list that would otherwise go to a player with an AFL background (maybe I'm misunderstanding the rules?).

Obviously there's a cost involved in terms of salary, relocation etc but for a bloke of Sandiland's height with that agility it's gotta be worth a shot and Eric is ample evidence of the club's ability to develop athletes from other codes.

WatooRoo's been all over this news, being a fellow American. 211cm's with agility and a deft touch with the feet would have to excite the coaches, seeing the ever growing proliferation of bean stalk ruck men these days.

Our very own "Coxtopus" would certainly give scottywiper something to smile about.

I think the club made a great decision in recruiting the Beast. Gives us the experience in developing guys from atypical backgrounds.
It may also help on this occasion to convince Cox to choose us.

Can he jump? Because Sandi can barely get off the ground, if he can also jump would be unstoppable.

Looks like it. And he can rove his own work by the looks of things too.
Looks promising, however, given he is 23 and Goldy only turns 26 in a couple of months there isn't a massive difference between them age-wise. Probably something we should consider in another 2 or 3 years when Goldy is 28 or 29, give a tall huge overseas prospect 2-3 years to develop then come in towards the end of Goldy's career.

Perhaps it is worth developing a backup in case Goldy goes down or one these trade Goldy people become in charge of our football department. :stern look

What a prospect can really move for his size.

Glad we're taking part on this process gotta be in it to win it.

Hopefully we can interest him in North, he's a ridiculously good mix of attributes.

If we had Majak, Eric and Mason Cox in the side we could really flush out the next generation of Reachers on this forum too.

Came in 4th for the absolute vertical jump (whatever that is). His running looks very good but he does look light on from the vision, hard to tell though. I think if he was going to fill out to 110kgs like Sandi his running would take a beating and his leap.

Curious what his weight is at, he doesn't look to be very heavy but it can be a bit deceiving. My concern would be what happens when his body shape changed for AFL level.

It is a shame they don't do beep tests.

Imagine the influx of members, just to see athleticism at its best. Doesn't matter if they cant play footy.
