Why is your 'gold' 1996 cup so special that yous have to keep on referring to it as if it's something extraordinary?

It doesn't equal 2 premierships y'know.

P.S. I'd gladly accept any premiership cup, even if it were papier mache!

Yep, it's only one, but it's nice to have a gold one. It just makes it kind of special. If you don't have one at all, and don't have much chance of getting one, I suppose any cup would do.
Sorry, your point was ???

PS Just noticed your occupation - you should know that gold is better than silver, surely.

True, its something us Roos supporters are very proud of but every other club need not give a toss about.

96 was a pretty exciting premiership for the younger generation of Roos supporters being the first flag after nearly two decades & for many it was the first flag they'd witnessed.

It was recognised as the centenary year of footy, there was a lot of hoop-la going on, they made the cup gold, yeah so what?
Well, it really stands out in our trophy cabinent at Arden Street.

I'll definately treasure 96 more than 99 and probably any future grand finals that we may be so fortunate to take out in my life time.

It is fitting that the 1996 premiership cup was gold. In this day and age where money means everything in sports, it symbolises true triumph over adversity. A fair-dinkum aussie under-dog winning the ultimate prize.

While teams like the bombers and crows were throwing their money on-
training resources
multiple coaching staffs
recruiting and
over-the-salary-cap player payments,
the roo administration were busy plotting their assult on the flag from the refurbished toilet blocks.

Yet the roos beat all challengers to that magnificent gold cup.

They should have made the 99 cup gold aswell. It might be the last time a so called "poor Melbourne team" wins an AFL Premiership cup.

Commiserations to-
Geelong
StKilda
Bulldog
and Hawthorn fans.
At least as a roo supporter, I can say we "stuck it up them",..twice,.. before the likes of Jackson, Packer, Elliot and McGuire shaft our poor little clubs.

I also prefer sterling silver (or white gold) to yellow gold. Just personal preference, nothing to do with a lack of class CIK.

Well I forgot to post my thoughts on the topic!!!!!!!! Dammit, think I need a bit more sleep

ANYWAY. I don't see that there's anything wrong with the Roo fans bragging about their clubs gold premiership cup, it IS a one-off after all. Something a little special.

96 was also the year that the AFL decided that the Brisbane Lions were more important than the Kangas the Kangas proved that they were more important than the Brisbane Lions and have done ever since. 96 was the year that they ripped the rug from under us and they thought we would go away and die just like everyone else thought. The Gold cup stands for so many things. It is appropriate that Wayne Carey held a Gold Cup in his hands for us in 96, Is there a Kanga supporter will ever forget the look on Rolss Oakleys face as our boys ran the lap of honour with that Gold cup held high, not me. And Gordon Noel unless you have been through what we went through that year and the years before then it is understandable that you would not understand what it means to us, there wont be another one like it for 100yrs and i wouldnt mind betting that the Kangas will win that one too. But the most important thing about it is we have it.

Sorry Lioness, but it has.
Some people prefer tatoos as well.

Sandie,
If you have to ask that question you have proved my point for me. Did I read that you also have a pit-bull ? They kind of go together.

Actually it comes from that shop called Whats New, and the little pom pom girl at the bottom who does she belong to, by the way the cabinet could do with a dust.
