AFLW North vs Dogs

Disappointing again this evening, we might have been unlucky with the umpires but before people fly off the handle it’s worth noting that both teams scored 1.0 directly from free kicks and we were only -2 points in scores from turnovers.

It’s also worth noting that we were two years younger on average and had 96 fewer games experience with 7 teenagers to 2.

However letting Jasmine Garner get a record 13 clearances and 20 contested possessions was unforgivable as was letting them get many easy uncontested marks inside 50.

Letting King, Garner and Kearney dominate for the entire match was disappointing to see and for us to not try and tag at least one of them out of the game was frustrating. To be fair we did really miss Rennie in those centre bounces.

Once again we were our own worst enemy with us having more shots at goal going at just 23% in front of goal compared to 42% for North.

Lamb battled hard and should’ve been rewarded on two or three occasions but instead got the opposite. Brown was outstanding with 10 tackles and 3 intercept marks. She is quickly becoming our best defender and it’s fantastic to see after struggling in her first few seasons.

Toogood and Huntington were solid but kicked just 3 goals from 7 shots between them.

Newtown is starting to find some form while Hartwig and Fitzgerald were the pick of the first year players with 9 disposals each and applied a good amount of pressure. Hartwig’s ability to break tackles is something we’ve been lacking over the years and she is only going to get better.

It’s going to be tough to make it now but I guess at the start of the season that was expected and when you look at our list and see just how young it is short term success was always going to be a stretch. Honestly I was expecting maybe 2 or 3 wins at best this year and to have 4 wins with 2 games remaining is certainly a positive. We are getting games into our teenagers and with most of our list is signed on until at least 2022 we should be pushing hard for Top 6 next year and maybe with a bit of luck we sneak in this year.

Now as always here are some of the rarer stats…

I get your point, but some of those unpaid free kicks for us could have resulted in a couple of goals for us.
It’s one thing to lose, it’s another to have the umpires influence the game to the extent that they did.

Free kick after the siren for a goal really took the wind out of the girl's sails. It was a real heart breaker, cost a lot in terms of momentum.

Has anybody worked out what it was awarded for?
