It’s the old might have

Might have had the 3 missing turned it into a contest?
Maybe Sydney show a bit more urgency if we have those three. Pointless exercise, really. You never felt like we were in with a real sniff. Goal review on 3QT was farcical though and snuffed out any momentum at the worst time

His turnovers killed us.

How can you give two coaches votes to a player who made 10 turnovers without attending a single stoppage?
He attended multiple stoppages and won at least two clearances.

But on the face of it I agree.

However both coaches gave him votes and as much as we joke about it they don't give them for games that benefit the opposition.

Anyway I just wanted to confirm that's what you were referring to.

Sorry. I meant center bounces.

Coz DE isn't everything. It was a more outside role than normal for Jy but his work rate was in Bailey Smith territory. He ran himself into the ground helping the defense and providing options for his teammates. When was the last time we had anyone other than a rebound defender clock up 809m gained? If he can get a couple of his team mates to join him, our transition game will finally become competitive.

Fair shout.

Certainly had some Bailey Smith level DE too.

And fwiw, Howie is going to next level obnoxiousness as a footy commentator
He is actually one of the absolute worst. I would prefer Jamie Brayshaw, Bryan Taylor, Gerard Healey and Dwayne Russell. I'd even accept Nick Dal Santo and Keli Underwood. I do not like Mark Howard one bit. Not at all.

I don't like any of the ones I mentioned above either.

There’s a self importance that is creeping in I’ve detected

I have no idea what this is but I guess you can’t reply because your battery is dead CS.
Nah not dead just on the farm, you know how it is. Up early, bed early. There's only so much you can watch other people do, eventually it's tiring.

So I had a close look at the replay, and my general impression is that with the likes of Xerri, McDonald and Archer absent, we were ground down physically, and hence the fade out from half way into the third quarter. This is perhaps best personified by Powell being unable to physically/athletically match Heeney.

Of course the other general impression is the number of poor turnovers, which spoiled in some cases outstanding passages of play. One that comes to mind is the terrific series of pressure acts in the first quarter that culminated in a Sydney turnover via a Konstanty-Sheezel tackle, followed by a brilliant handball chain involving LDU-McKercher-Sheezel-Phillips-Powell-Konstanty to Curtis, but the latter's kick to the forward pocket ended up OOB and gave Comben no chance. However, that passage of play showed this group at its best - run and gun by hand, in numbers, and always look to distribute through Sheezel.

That's a good segue to Konstanty, who did some great things with tackle pressure working back to D50, but yes, he certainly needs to improve his final kick into F50, fluffing two good opportunities. He seemed to snatch at one, so if I'm coach, I'd be encouraging him just to take a split second longer to settle, and couple that with some high repetition drills around F50 entries at training. However, IMO he won't be dropped while he keeps up the tackle pressure.

It's also a further segue to Comben - the service to him was certainly wasteful, and although he brought the ball to ground a couple of times (eg for Harvey's first goal), overall the experiment forward was not a success. But the lack of success comes in two parts - first, Charlie didn't contribute much forward, and then his replacement at FB, Will Dawson, got shown up for want of physical presence. Two of the first three Sydney goals came from Wawson being outpointed by physically stronger opponents, so IMO it's back to the VFL for another pre-season, bring Charlie back and put Finbar forward again. Another option might be to keep Dawson alongside Comben, but send Pink forward - I thought he was at least serviceable when forward last year, and right now there aren't many better options.

In the ruck, even for the time he played, CCJ was disappointing and it might be a low bar, but I thought Teakle went better against Grundy, so he'll be in next week. It's just a pity Teakle isn't that 5-6 kgs heavier, which might put him in the ruck-forward category, rather than the forward-ruck role.

Phillips - had some moments with parts in handball chains and tackle pressure, but his hands continue to let him down; dropped a regulation mark in the back pocket in the second quarter, the poor handball to Simpkin etc. 70 metres gained for a player who should be a prime midfield mover is not enough if there's a better option, and with George back in form, there is.

So onto next week - I think there's some options at selection to improve the side, but if I'm Clarkson, I'm really putting it on the leaders, formal and informal, to sharpen up disposal. Confidence may be down, but an appeal to the pride of players as professionals wouldn't go astray.
