Northerly vs Sunline

My mate & I were having a debate the other day as to which was the better horse.

I said Northerly because being a horse he always carried more weight and whenever they raced against each other Northerly always prevailed.

My mate said Sunline because she won in more countries, more prizemoney and Northerly could not win in Sydney.

Two great horses & probably no clear cut answer, but what do you think?

Ps, I don't think I ever liked Sunline as much after she got rolled by Over in that Doncaster which cost me big bucks!

That's good enough for me. I think all 3 (I could be wrong) were at the Valley, and that's where Sunline raced at her best. So IMO, Northerly was a fair bit better.

Agreed, Northerly rates higher in my books.

Lets not drag this up again,both were true stars of the track.
Comparing horses,even if they did compete against each other is ALWAYS clouded by the punt.
Stats can be tricky,see Northerly/Old Comrade etc.

Isnt it amazing that IMO one of Sunline's bravest efforts was her 2nd in that Doncaster to the 3yo Over,giving him 6kg.
The next week at WFA she towelled him by 5 at the same course & distance.

Northerly was the better horse because of his amazing will to win, as far as ability goes they were line ball but it was the fighting qualities that got Northerly past her. That's my opinion.

Now have I ever told you Seth about cox plate day 2002, me and a few mates went to mv dressed in our home made Northerly tees and we....



Seriously, yeah Northerly has given me my biggest punting thrills in the sport, so it does taint my opinion of the horse a little i guess. But if we wound the clock back 2-3 years and Sunline was flying and Northerly was flying and it was Cox Plate day at the Valley, sun shining beer flowing chicks mmmmmmmm the chicks were gleaming, I would have absolutely no hesitation in what I'd do with the $200 sitting in my front right punting pocket all over again....it'd go straight onto the nose of the fighting tiger. Along with the other $30 sitting in my front left pocket, the cab money. And 10mins later I'd be lining up to collect 3 or 4 times that amount. Not a doubt in my mind, brimming confidence i'd do it all over again and again I'd win.

But some people will still say Sunline was the better horse. Ha i love these people. They were always good to push out the price on the champ.

The WA Bulldog won me some serious dough over time, head to head against the mighty mare and superior record overall has got to put Kersley's champ in front.

Northerly may have been better but ran against sunline when it was in its last 18 months of racing and nowhere near as good as in its peak.Greg Childs is probably the man to ask as he rode both horses for years.
Anyhow it’s not about who is better let’s just say thankyou to both
