Kangaroos announce Chief Executive

Thursday, August 16, 2001

THE Kangaroos today announced that Mr. Michael Easy has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer.

The position became vacant after Greg Miller recently announced he would be standing down at the end of this season after seven years at the helm.

In making the announcement Chairman Elect, Dr. Allen Aylett said that following a rigorous process Mr Easy was the candidate with the best credentials to lead the Kangaroos into the future.

Mr. Easy is currently employed as the AFL's Investigations Manager, a position he had held for the past two and a half years. Prior to joining the AFL, Mr. Easy worked in his private consulting practice, having previously spent eight years with Ernst and Young.

Mr. Easy is set to take over the role at a date mutual to both the Kangaroos and the AFL, in order to allow a smooth transition for both parties.

Dr. Aylett acknowledged that the Kangaroos were indeed indebted to Greg Miller for his tireless contribution over the past two decades and in particular during the 1990's, culminating in two premierships.

It is expected that Mr. Miller will remain with the club in a yet to be determined capacity.

What a controversy he has created!! I though Eddie's head was going to explode last night on TFS. I guess he had a point in a way, but he was probably jealous that we got him first and in any case the AFL probably can't ban him from taking a job at a club - it would probably be against the restraint of trade rules or something. I guess they will have to trust that he can abide by whatever confidentiality agreements that he has signed.

Allen Aylett and Michael Easy at our club is fantastic. Obviously North have head hunted the best people. I only hope that Geoff Walsh is not to upset.

I think Eddie's point is quite irrelevent. Most clubs know when opposition clubs contracts run out and how much they are being paid are anyway. Easy's job was basically to represent the AFL when ensuring that the clubs haven't breached salary caps.

Eddie is just upset because he didn't think of it first. If we have any advantage from it, it will only be for 6 months or so. And Michael would have to be some sort of genius if he can remember the specifics of each players contacts.

Eddie is dead wrong to say Michael Easy has a conflict of interest.

Unlike himself, Easy is not wearing two hats - or as in Eddie's case multiple hats - at once. Now, if he was the AFL's Investigations Manager AND CEO of the Kangaroos at the same time, there would be a MacGuire-style conflict of interest (be handy for North though!) As it is, Easy left one job to go to another, big deal.
