This is not a thread complaining about the umpires being "stricter" on 15m calls, although I've hated every second of that this year.

No, this is a thread about our gameplan. Every week we see Crows players getting called not 15m play on in crucial situations, particularly down back, often from the kick-in itself. All too often it allows an extra shot on goal for the opposition, or at best, stifles our offensive thrust.

Whether you think that the umpires being hotter on 15m calls is a good thing or a bad thing, the reality is that our team seems instructed to present exactly 15m away from their teammates, just inviting these kinds of calls to occur. There are some serial offenders in this regard - Laird is the worst at it, consistently working to 15m from the player with the ball and then calling for it. But he is far from the only one.

Even today, we saw a player as talented as Thilthorpe stuff up a short kick across defensive goal which, if it hadn't been cut off by an opponent, would have been called play on anyway (the umpire had already said "not 15" before the intercept happened). You can decry Thilthorpe for the poor kick, but what was his teammate doing calling for the ball 12m away, right in front of the defensive goal? There was spare ground ahead of him that he could have worked into, so that there was any chance of being paid a mark.

It happens often enough that it feels like part of a strategy to offer a short option 15m from the ball, although it's unclear to me whether getting that close is designed to stretch the opposition defence a bit further, or if it's just because shorter kicks are easier to execute. Either way, it's extremely frustrating as a supporter to see teammates standing so close to the ball carrier all the time, just inviting a call to go against them. At best, the ball carrier rightly ignores them and they contribute nothing to the play.

Surely, given how hot the umpires have been on this in 2025, our players should be instructed to get 20m or more away from the ball carrier when creating an option?

Has been infuriating.

And we don't seem to be learning or adjusting either. I posted this after the Geelong game:

Dumb
We don't get far enough back from the mark for free kicks or marks. So we are needlessly under pressure when called to play on, or are forced to kick high or sideways, or as per tonight get smothered

Crouch is the captain of this particular dumb habit club. Hinge and Keane are co-vice captains

Even Dumber
Has anyone told us the umpires are being more strict this year on 15m for a kick? We are masters at the borderline short pass which suddenly turns a zero pressure situation into a hot potato hospital ball

We also seem to be getting progressively worse at this as the season goes on. At the start of the year we had laser precision with our short passes. Teams have either figured us out or it's that we can't play Essendon and St Kilda every week.

I noticed a few that were paid in our backline today which I thought we were lucky to get away with.
The rule is now a coin toss and our game plan means there's more chances to be on the wrong end of it. I'd hate to lose a final that way

This is just one amongst MANY instances where we as a team are not smart.

- Putting arms up when getting tackled when we actually want the stoppage.

- Dragging the ball in and then pretending that not having the ball in our hands means we are absolved of responsibility. We even wave the arms directly at the umpire to ram home the point that we are not even trying to get it out as is our responsibility.

- Regularly adding the people into the handball chain who fit one or more of the following criteria:
  • On their 'wrong' side
  • about to get poleaxed upon the ball reaching them
  • Under more pressure than the ball carrier themselves
  • Anyone with a pulse on our team or otherwise for da stat (this one is just for Laird and Crouch)
  • A ruckman with severe hand-to-boot speed deficiency

- Killing momentum by giving away totally unnecessary 50s (Izak and Tex)

- Absolutely refusing to kill the game in red time preferring instead to take on the risky kick or trying to break 4 tackles 30m out from their goal.

- and yes, dinky little 12m diagonal kicks that unnecessarily risk a turnover.

I think there are 2 separate issues here:

1. We should be looking for longer kicks eg. Kicking a minimum distance of 18m.
(I do generally think we are sometimes doing too many unnecessary short passes.)

2. This is one of the most subjective rules currently going around and one that can easily be influenced by umpiring bias.
I noticed in today’s game, it was being strictly governed in the first half. But in the last quarter, similar questionable short passes were deemed fine.

Great list. We are pretty dumb and I hope that's just inexperience.

One thing we're getting inedible smart at is drawing high free kicks without really drawing much attention from media.

This really frustrates me. It's another rule that I really hate, but it's been paid that way for several years now boys. For most of you, it's been paid that way for your entire career. How have you not got it yet?

We got a bunch of frees we never get against the big vic sides so the umps can say at seasons end when we are about even on frees for and against that they don't have it in for us. When in reality we get shafted regularly in crucial moments that cost us wins against contending vic sides. So a bunch of nothing frees in a blowout win means nothing

I could be wrong, but with those “not 15s” that were paid marks, I don’t think there was an eagle in the vicinity. Had someone been within tackling range I think play on would have been called.
