May 12th, 2000 the Kangaroos played Fremantle in Melbourne on Mothers' Day and only drew a crowd of 12,400
The media, and the footy world in general, had a field day at the Kangaroos' expense.
July 21st, 2001 Carlton played Fremantle in Melbourne on a normal day (ie not Mothers' Day, Fathers Day, Valentines Day, Independence Day...or what have you) and drew a crowd of 15,622.
I bet there is NOT ONE bit of negativity about Carlton's inability to draw a crowd against Fremantle in Melbourne. All the mitigating circumstances will be simply assumed as fact, unlike the very same factors (and in fact one additional and very significant factor....Mothers' Day) when the Kangaroos played Freo last year.
Let's wait and see.
