Toast Not bottoming out

I used to think that trading draft picks away=trading away your future but that's wrong .

What is to stop Geelong from in 6 years time trading away draft picks for good 24-26 year olds like we did last year ?

This doesn't kick the can further down the road because 6 years after that we can do the same thing again .
That is by definition kicking the can down the road. The cheapest ways to get stars is to get them with a single first round draft pick when they are still an unknown quantity. Try to acquire them 6 years down the track and they cost you big time plus you dont get as much longevity out of them. It can work once or twice but eventually will catch up with you.

We do have an issue with our list age profile with our 20-22 year olds which will need to be addressed at some point like we did last year bringing in PFD, Smith, Henderson and Selwood to fill the 24-27 year old gap.

the other problem is that only 1 of those 11 19-20 years is a first rounder with most being well well down the list. Will most likely have to prune a lot of those players.

No we didn't.
Basically we traded pick 9 and pick 15-18.
That's it.
To suggest that destroys the "future" is ignorant at best.
Particularly when by trading those picks we get in return 4 6+ year guns.
Not true. Usually over a four year period we would of traded a varcoe or christensen for draft picks such as when we traded mumford for the pick that got us duncan or prismall for the pick that got us motlop. but we traded them for older players instead. So those draft picks which we have relied on in the past are missing too. We have also traded a few second and third rounders as well and then before that we had the compromised drafts so really didnt have first round picks then either.

We didnt get a single player in the afls top team under 22 and to be honest we dont even have a player thats close to that team. If they did a second team we still might not have one entrant. We are very bare if cockatoo doesnt become a star.

The trading away the future stuff has relevance - but really only has baring with hindsight.

So far, its been MORE than worth it.
PFD has won most pundit and industry awards - and is the Phar Lap of Brownlow Medal favourites right now - and almost more importantly - is ready and willing to trade them all to get a Flag.

Hendo has probably been in careeer best form and if not for a few bung weeks and an injury here and there, makes pick 15 look great value - pick 18 is just a steal.

Scooter didnt cost "the future" other than SC and ask Hodge and Mitchell if it made the Cats a better proposition going forward.

Zac Smith - Look at the clearance numbers and whilst he is not the only reason - 2 picks in the late 40's/early 50's for that contribution is more than fair.

Now consider that with picks in the 60's, Wells has pulled Menegola who has become a lock in the MF and added to our best 22....

Id say even hindsight has us WELL infront and not mortgaged at all.

But what about going forward?

We have Rd2, 2 x RD3, and so forth - Is it Rd 1? Sure it is not. Its hardly a mortgaged future either.

Go Catters

To the naysayers (yes, Seeds I am looking at you), if you were looking at it totally unemotionally which other club would you swap lists with right now?

GWS is the only one in my opinion. You could also make an argument for the Swans, but that is about it.

I agree we cant just pick up mature age players , we need to use the draft as well .

If we can do well in the next few drafts we can than go bang in a few years time and pick up a few really good senior players like we did last year .This would make up for the draft picks we lost last year . So we really have not given up that much .

Bottom line is we need to both the daft and trade period to good effect . We cant depend on just 1 .

Being a destination club gives us a massive head start, not only do player want to come and play for us but we are also able to keep players on our list for less cost. Being a destination effectively gives you a larger salary cap to work with.

Having a top 5 player in the comp contracted long term on less than market salary also effectively means that you have a larger salary cap to work with.

It's not mutually exclusive for someone to think
1. We made the right decision to go after the guys we did for the price we did given the players we had
2. We're probably going to be ****ed in the long run when our current group goes past their prime.

Number 2 isn't caused by the last trade period alone but it is going to make it more likely to happen.

It is avoidable, we just have a lot of right decisions that need to be made at the right time.

It's true in what you say Seeds but in life there are times whereby it's hard to have your cake and eat it to, therefore it's important when opportunity knocks to make sure we're are at home. Cats trading last year was sensational, injecting from draft four quality proven 25/26 yo's which at time was a major weakness on our list. Granted we got Menzel, McCarthy and Cowan back from long term injuries this year who also came under this age group along with Stanley, Duncan and Bartel who were coming back from long lay offs in 2015. The footy club did the right thing targeting and obtaining these players as we have gone from a potential bottom eight side this year to a genuine premiership chance and one would assume a genuine top four side in coming years. It must be understood there are now 18 clubs in competition meaning on average clubs are a chance of winning a flag every 18 years (GWS may even extend those odds), so from a time frame point of view these are not great odds hence it's best to strike when the irons hot if given the opportunity.
