You'd think coming off the back of an 86 point flogging of any AFL team you'd be reasonably happy with the direction of the club, however I think we are seriously kidding ourselves if we think we are finals material at this point in the season.
Our boys played "well" nothing outstanding just a good effort, which was made to look 10 times better by an absolutely deplorable Hawthorn side. The first 10 minutes did look ominous, but to the guys credit they didn't let it bother them.
Carlton will this week be coming off a 100 point flogging, and will definitely be a lot more competitive than the Hawks.
Gary Ayres appeared to have one of his better days in the coaching box, but in reality the game was there for the taking at quarter time. In all fairness to the Adelaide Football CLub we are definitely not the worst team in the AFL at the moment, and I fear we may end up 9th or 10th, which in the long run is going to do more harm than good for the team. We could perhaps sneak 8th spot, but in reality what is the point, when we are clearly not good enough to do anything in the finals.
Some pleasing efforts from certain players on the weekend. Jacob Schuback, looks to be a classy player who copes with the pressure associated with AFL football. Mattner has earned praise for his tackle on Crawford, Nobody ever questioned his ability to tackle, it's more the ability to dispose of the ball appropriately when under pressure and to make the right decisions. He still needs to work on it.
Was great to finally see our forward line functioning the way we had planned about 2 years ago. A real poor part of our game on Saturday appeared to be our centre clearanes, after watching a side like St Kilda yesterday if we don't win the centre clearances, we don't win the football match because the Saints are so damaging from the ball ups. It shows we definitely need to go through a rebuilding stage, when we had Shirley and Skipworth playing in the centre. We are kidding ourselves if we make 8th, 9thh or 10th, this year and say that list we have is extremely good, and with a bit of luck injuries wise next year, we should be top four material. Time for some serious thinking and some serious decisions to be made.
This week I'd like to see Brent Reilly given another go, perhaps at the expense of Hayden Skipworth. Mattner deserves another week, just purely for the presence he gives with his strong tackles. Biglands definitely shouldn't be in this week, give him at least 3 weeks in the SANFL.
Ins: Goodwin, Reilly, Begley (How's his groin?)
Outs: Skipworth, Doughty, Bassett
