You'd think coming off the back of an 86 point flogging of any AFL team you'd be reasonably happy with the direction of the club, however I think we are seriously kidding ourselves if we think we are finals material at this point in the season.

Our boys played "well" nothing outstanding just a good effort, which was made to look 10 times better by an absolutely deplorable Hawthorn side. The first 10 minutes did look ominous, but to the guys credit they didn't let it bother them.

Carlton will this week be coming off a 100 point flogging, and will definitely be a lot more competitive than the Hawks.

Gary Ayres appeared to have one of his better days in the coaching box, but in reality the game was there for the taking at quarter time. In all fairness to the Adelaide Football CLub we are definitely not the worst team in the AFL at the moment, and I fear we may end up 9th or 10th, which in the long run is going to do more harm than good for the team. We could perhaps sneak 8th spot, but in reality what is the point, when we are clearly not good enough to do anything in the finals.

Some pleasing efforts from certain players on the weekend. Jacob Schuback, looks to be a classy player who copes with the pressure associated with AFL football. Mattner has earned praise for his tackle on Crawford, Nobody ever questioned his ability to tackle, it's more the ability to dispose of the ball appropriately when under pressure and to make the right decisions. He still needs to work on it.

Was great to finally see our forward line functioning the way we had planned about 2 years ago. A real poor part of our game on Saturday appeared to be our centre clearanes, after watching a side like St Kilda yesterday if we don't win the centre clearances, we don't win the football match because the Saints are so damaging from the ball ups. It shows we definitely need to go through a rebuilding stage, when we had Shirley and Skipworth playing in the centre. We are kidding ourselves if we make 8th, 9thh or 10th, this year and say that list we have is extremely good, and with a bit of luck injuries wise next year, we should be top four material. Time for some serious thinking and some serious decisions to be made.

This week I'd like to see Brent Reilly given another go, perhaps at the expense of Hayden Skipworth. Mattner deserves another week, just purely for the presence he gives with his strong tackles. Biglands definitely shouldn't be in this week, give him at least 3 weeks in the SANFL.

Ins: Goodwin, Reilly, Begley (How's his groin?)
Outs: Skipworth, Doughty, Bassett

I agree & so does Ayres that the finals are not for consideration at this point in time. We need to concentrate on putting a winning streak together.

I like Schuback's long kicking into the forward line & his tackling/pressure on opponents.

Mattner showed more than he is just a good tackler. He actually broke the lines by running off HB & pumped the ball in long to our forward line. Deserves to be given more games.

What did Bassett do wrong? Would be a joke if he gets dropped IMO. Also, Goodwin is unforunately a long way off returning.

I agree 110%.

I am sick and tired of everyone bagging Bassett when he doesn't deserve it. I put my hand up and say that I DO bag him when I think he had a stinker but he was VERY good on the weekend.

I don't get people's agro towards this guy who gives his all when ever he pulls on a crows jumper. Some people are really poor judges of football. If Bassett gets dropped for that performance then so does the other 90% of the side:rolleyes:

Nothing wrong with Bassetts efforts, I was probably wrong, I just couldn't really think of anyone who Begley could force out of the side. I was just thinking Goodwin (Midfielder) for Doughty (Midfielder) Reilly (Midfielder) for Skipwroth (Midfielder) and Begley (Defender) for Bass (Defender) probably unjust though. Please disregard those comments.

Massie would probably be the one to go out for Begley. He's had a good start to the year and I love the guy, but it seems you can either have Torney or Massie and I think I'd pick Torney everytime. Massie's lack of game time on Saturday would suggest the coaching panel probably agree.

For the reason that you have provided, it is a given that Massie will be dropped.

I have only 2 concerns with Bassett but neither of them relate to effort. A genuine crack is given by the guy every time he pulls on the guernsey. My concerns are that he isn't always "footy smart" but then again he is no orphan. The other concern is my impression that he doesn't cope well with an injury when it first happens. He either has the most amazing recuperative powers to get up for the next week or has a low pain threshold when an injury occurs.

Having said all that, I would definitely have him in my starting 18 and there is no way he would be dropped on his last few games.

This is the most amusing and frustrating part of Bass, who I rate a lot higher than some others do on this Board. I like players who give 100% every week.

But back to the injury aspect. He goes down as if he's dead doesn't he. You'd swear he'll be out for weeks, but no, up he bobs again next match!!! :p

I would suspect a low pain threshold when an injury occurs, Fergus, as nobody ever refers to him as Super Bass!!! :D

Well I agree with that but its hardly a reason to drop him.

He is a very good player and very underrated.

I don't think this board bags Bassett do they?
Its more about the fact we don't see him being able to hold down the FB position against bigger, stronger FF.
Even you have indicated a preference for a new FB.

I don't think we have ever questioned his effort, skills, or decision making.
