AFL is growing in Qld - just not as quickly as we all would like it too. It is now played in nearly all primary schools, as either a school sport, or even a once or twice off clinic. The Lions have only 2000 less full financial members than the Broncos, and have had an average higher attendance at all games this year.
Media coverage is the stumbling block up here. The only times an AFL story is before a Legue story on tv, is when it is something bad. (Lynch DHEA issue, Heusekes walk out etc). There is very little media promotion of the game up here.
Lasts years North v Lions prelim rated something like the 6th most watched program for the whole year, and was the last prime-time live game shown here. The Game, or Footy Show (AFL), Talking Footy, Sunday Footyshow etc are replayed once in the early hours of the morning. And Friday and Saturday night games are aired somewhere between 11pm and 1am. Rex Hunt's show on Sunday has even been known to be pre-empted by dirt racing!
You can't expect ppl to like a game they never get to see! Remove a devout Legue fan from the position of Programming Manager at ch7 Bris and Sydney, and you might get better results.
20 years ago, ppl used to ask 'what is that?' when I said I watched the VFL on tv on the weekend. Now, my 7yo is enrolled in a summer skills clinic, and parents of kids in his class want to know all about it!
More kids are playing Aussie Rules as juniors than RLeague at the moment - so it will take time, but as they grow older, so the dominance of League in Qld will slip!
