Some clubs are able to stay at the top and rebuild their football teams...Essendon the obvious example over the past 20 years, and Carlton as well up until that year that is.

Not so the Lions.

Give us another year or 2 at the top....then back to earth with a thud. And I am not just talking dropping a few places either...I mean bottom 4 status.

In the GF we had just a handful of players under the age 25.

Not many players play good football beyond the age of 28 these days, except for a few freaks (blessed with endurance such as Blakey, Bradley, Tuck) and Lynchy.

Lets just hope we can cash in again in 2003.....cost after that I am tipping a lengthy holiday at the bottom of the ladder.

...full of good cheer there Maverick.

Even if there is a remote chance of it happening, do we really need to know about it, we will experience soon enough by your reconing.

Keep the punchlines coming Ian. You can be the Lions BigFooty version of Seindud.

Do you think perhaps you're just a bit over concerned about the future... We've got as much chance as anyone else and the draft etc works the same for us as everyone else... our players will continue to hold value on the trade market and we've got a recruiting team that should have just proven to you that they're no slouches when it comes to putting together a top side..
As Donald Sutherland would say..
Have a little faith baby... have a little faith :D

I think to some extent Mav is right, we have seen this with Leigh going for Keating over Charman during the finals even though Charman had a brilliant year, and Bradshaw not being given a proper go.

I would like to see players like Ashley McGrath, Hadley, the Bradshaws etc being given a good run next season.

Well, said. The proof is in the pudding. When Leigh and Co stop delivering premeiership contention years then, maybe I could understand doubts.

Still every one is different and view things in different ways .

I saw it like this. Keating earned the right to play in that Grand Final, if not for the injured McDonald he may never had got a chance, but he took it and showed he was back to his best form. In his best form he requires selection. I also think that it was McDonald who was shown loyalty and faith by being allowed to play before Charman. If we had lost the GF, I wonder what would of been said about the amount of "not quite fit" players in the side.

The reality is, to win premierships, and finish high on the ladder, you need to win often. To do this consistantly, and cover for injuries, poor form, etc, you need playing depth. To achieve and maintain this, players, good players, are going to miss out. Anything but your best cannot be considered good enough and poor form means go to the back of the line. Get a chance then you had better take it. We all have our favourites and for one reason or another are usually immune or blind to their faults. Leigh and Co, see and know things we don't, with regards to players, and really are in the best position to judge. Charman did have a good year, a great year even but he is Number 3 ruckman. With some clubs lucky to have 1 decent Ruckman, we have the luxury of rotating two excellent ones with a spare should one get injured. As for Bradshaw, saying Darren wasn't given a go is a bit like saying Mark Waugh wasn't.

I love our players, but I love our team more. Success might mean having your cake and eating it too, but it's the healthy low-fat kind. It may not have ALL your favourite ingredients, but it is better for you.

what a lot of negative crap !!! whats wrong with you people why not just get over to the port boards now !! talk about bringing the place down. sure we wont be on top for ever but that does not mean we will be bottom 4 have faith we can continue to bring playeys through from the draft or wherever to continue our dominance you blokes sure have no faith in mathews and betham to keep the club up there. have a look at yourselves before next season and work out just who you are supporting !!!!

Maverick..............sounds like your missing the botom of the ladder! Your not sure how to cope with all this sucess. You crave the terrible beatings of a bygone era.
