Encouraging performance, but I'm not getting too excited considering the standard of the opposition.

Positives:

* Good return game from Mark Stevens - is there life left in him yet?
* Another top game from Carey - full marks to those who said he'd be better this year than last
* McGregor, Ricciuto, Johncock continued their good seasons
* Schuback played his best game for the club, he ran and ran
* Bock showed signs that he could develop into a decent KPP, he's looked more like a flanker til now
* Hentschel continued his solid form down back
* Good return to the team for Torney
* Edwards excellent in midfield
* McLeod showed some of his old magic
* Even the much maligned Mattner and Shirley put in reasonable performances; I thought Mattner was especially good for all four quarters, even his kicking wasn't too bad!

I loved the pressure all over the ground, in particular the forward 50. Schuback, Welsh and Edwards in particular were predators, running and chasing hard. We also tackled with real venom, I think it helped that the Hawks have a few players will smaller builds.

However we all know we played a deplorable side, with next to no leadership at all, so we can't go overboard but there certainly were good signs.

Can we do it 2 weeks in a row though?!?!

Mattner is finally getting praise, and rightly so. On the radio this morning, I think it was John Reid, said about the confidence the club has in Mini Stinga, giving me the indication that teh club may not want to get rid of him soon. And today's performance...wow! I hope he proved some doubters that the kid can play. :)

Plus he got rid of Crawf....:)

How could I have possibly picked Hawthorn today??

Any club whose coach cries on telly because he didn't want his club to be called a bad club is doomed. Schwab will carry this team to the bottom.

Dave and ant are right when they say that the win has to be judged in the context of playing a sub-standard side in Hawthorn.

But there were some real pluses IMO.

- the return of Stevo - all of a sudden we had structure
- the return of Torney
- our tackling was ferocious
- good games from the young bucks, especially Schuback and Mattner
- some McLeod magic
- Hentschel blossoming into a key defender

Hawthorn may just have played us into good form again, returning the favour we paid them last year.

I'm thinking the same thing, macca23.

Schuback was excellent, his pressure in the forward line was something we haven't had for a while. Very impressed with him.

Mattner's certainly making every post a winner in the last couple of weeks, and if he keeps playing along those lines, he'll be here again next year.

On the other hand I just can't see that Skippy has what it takes at this level. Bode would be in my side in a heartbeat before Skippy.

IMO Skippy will be one of the first cut at year end.

I liked Mattners risk taking. He backed himself as did Schuback and it was great to watch.

I think it went Hentschel--->>> to Mattner--->>> to Shuy...GOAL

Theres nothing wrong with the youngstuff coming through.

I picked Hawks :(. I believed that if Hawks had any heart, respect and love for their team mate in Nathan Thompson, then should have blown us out of the water. Instead a bunch of selfish and soft girls rocked up to "play".

I think we have to take this win in its context. Hawks are REALLY struggling and we played them with probably our best side for the year. I won't be getting too excited unless we can string wins together. Our next 4 games are all winable (Carlton (H), WC (A), WB(H), Melbourne (H))

Positives:
  • Encouraging form of our youngsters, especially Schuey who was a hunter in the forward line
  • Stevo's return - as macca23 said all of a sudden we have a structure. With Stevo back it also allows Carey to play as a roaming forward which makes him a match winner.
  • Torney was fantastic today. His rebound and courage was sorely missed
  • After a couple of quite games Johncock has returned to form and did a great job on Crawford
  • Coaching. I thought Gary Ayres was on song today. Clarke was getting his pants pulled down by Everitt early and as a result Hawks were dominating. Move had to be made and Ayres brought on Hudson who was instrumental in our "come back"
  • Forward line pressure was the best it has been all year. Schuack is a real little terrier. I have been calling for his inclusion as a crumbing forward. He will always be good for a couple and will set up a couple more with his tackling. His pace is phenomenal and it allows him to run down opponents.
  • All of a sudden we have a spine. If we had Stevo from the start of the year we would probably be better placed in terms of wins and losses. He is greatly underrated

We have to back it up with a back to back win. This looks like one of those years where 11 wins might get you in the finals. I don't think we will make it because we are probably a game off from where I would have liked us to be.

I might be a bit mischievous here but I just find it interesting that when a coach asks for a good commited showing he is not getting it but when capatin asks for one he gets it. Roo wanted to win the showdown and the players played their hearts out. In his 250th they win. Might be coincidence.

I really feel the players have lil respect for Ayres and for one reason cuase he is stubborn and continues to play a game plan that continues to fail, we played a lil wide at times today but we used to corridor alot more and looked for better options, was listening to the radio in the car on the way home and Hawthorn had an astounding 58 clangers today that is woeful, to be honest Ayres couldnt have got it wrong today there was much of a team to coach against really, they said we had 31 clangers which IMO is still far too high I think 20 is acceptable at AFL level especially good sides.

The main reason I thought this Dave was that last year we were never going to see the best of him, as you can never under-estimate a year out of footy. The same goes for players coming back from knee reconstructions, in that they tend to be much better the 2nd year back as a general rule. Funny now we are getting all the talk that Carey may go on in 2005...

I honestly thought the main difference on Satruday was our ball use

It was awesom and theres was woeful.

I didn't think there was that much difference in intensity. I think we pressured them more when they had the ball but tehy were leading clearences hit outs and centre breaks for the majority of the match.

Every player contriubted for us other than Skipworth I thought.

The major positive for me was the way McLeod stood up after the criticism. His play in the last ten minutes of the first quarter was absolutely awesome.

Not sure if Macca_no1 is one of them morons but good call Tyson20. Some people do jump very quickly and just love to bag the coach who ever it is.

If he is not into the side this week (pending on injury, because that I will accept), I'm planning to see if I can track down Mrs Ayers and ask her the age old question; "So you and Bode hey?"

That is the only reason I can see for him not playing.

And Raids he has always been most liked, well to some of us anyway. :)

I agree that I don't know what to get out of Saturday's game. Our start was ordinary, but then kept them to 4 goals after the 10 minute mark of the first quarter, which was a job well done. However, I believe the game was more Hawthorn played badly more than Adelaide played well. As Randy Jackson would say, it was 'aiye' (I think that means it was alright, not fantastic, not terrible).

Hawthorn are a rabble at the moment, and it looks like not only are they heading for the wooden spoon, but to a padded cell too.

Hopefully a huge win like that will boost the teams confidence, ready to deal with a Carlton team who coming off it's second 100+ point drubbing in a month. However, we have to be extremely cautious because both Carlton and West Coast have won the week after a 100+ point belting the previous week.

how would Sydney b feeling after they only limped over the line against Hawthorn the previous week...at the SCG!

not sure if Hawthorn are a rabble as such but they certainly are a long way away from where they need to be...

okay they didnt play well, but our intensity and pressure at the man would not hve helped their skill level...it was a good win, and we now look forward to the challenge this week...the Blue baggers will b fired up early so we will need to withstand that and continue our good performance from Saturday arvo...

should b interesting...

Sydney were flying in the 1st month of the season as 1 of the form teams.

Projected them at the beginning of the season for the Swans to finish 9th & don't think I will be too far out.
