Just by the by , but a lot of this subject with fantastic detail can be found on the very excellent podcast of
The Rest Is History.
I recommend this to you all , very entertaining and cover all sorts of subjects.

My family history intersected with a lot of this history directly KH.

The grandfather I mentioned, I have his passport from his travels throughout the Austro-Hungarian empire. He was conscripted into their (multilingual) armed forces, but luckily completed his service before WW1 started. He then ran a series of small 'osterie' (sort of a pub/tavern but also served coffee as well as alcohol) in north eastern Italy and Slovenia, but regularly crossed borders in all directions to purchase alcohol. Spoke many languages fluently too. Got most of his original contracts for purchase/sale of various osterie, and some records of his alcohol purchases (variously in German/Austrian, Italian and Slovenian).

My other grandfather was from an Italian enclave under Austrian rule, so he was conscripted (at 17!) and because the Austrians didn't want Italian subjects fighting Italians on the Italian front as they feared they would swap sides, his unit was sent to Ukraine, and endured freezing winters (one of the reasons I'm so empathetic with Ukraine remaining a sovereign country). They were opposed to the Russians, as both empires wanted to divide Ukraine (sound familiar? ☹). They had Ukrainians as both allies and opponents, as the Ukrainians were resigned to being occupied, but didn't really know which outcome was likely, or preferable. (History shows the Austrians were far more tolerant of their various subjects, and allowed autonomy, but once old Franz-Joseph died, that empire was doomed.)

One of my great grandfathers sold land directly to Franz Joseph to expand the land adjoining his hunting lodge, but that's a whole other story!

Anyway this second (italian) grandfather was also multilingual, was sent to work in Ethiopia/Somalia as a civilian under Mussolini's ill-fated dream of an African empire in the late 1930s. He eventually migrated here with his family after WW2, settled in St Albans, and as a little tacker, I remember him walking down his street greeting all his neighbours in their own language - Italuan, Slovenian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian.

My grandmothers were also multilingual, but one of them was killed by the Germans in WW2, and my father suffered the horrors of a concentration camp. Again that's a whole other story, but the origin of why I detest fascists and N**is (still refuse to ever type or write that word). And why I abhor anyone here in Australia posturing as a N**i They are too stupid and ignorant to understand the history of what their dictator and movement did during WW2.

Anyway, sorry, gone off on a rant/ramble as I'm prone to do...

Look I admire your pouring gasoline all over yourself and going all Thich Quang Duc as way of protest and standing by your principles.

But I dont think the mods/admins soft as baby shit handling of a problem of other peoples making by first shunting it of to the cold dark void of Dog Tags only to scrub it completely is worth leaving over whatever you've got out of coming here.

I may have missed it if an explanation why was posted here. But even putting in that place was better than scrubbing it in its entirety. But I suspect that the moaning misanthropes that inhabit this place woulddve still found a way to have a good old whinge about it. I can only assume that many of them didnt like having their Emperor exposed as having no clothes and even fewer brains when they poked their heads into a thread that they despised but seemingly returned to like a dog returning to its vomit. Or when they saw it bumped to the top of the board.

Like this one is about to be.

Sorry.

This summarises why the thread has been closed:
There are numerous forums for discussions about US politics. You have plenty of opportunities to discuss US politics on those forums.

Over many months, other mods and I warned the thread participants to abide by the site rules. We were concerned that the thread was toxic and created division between Bulldogs supporters about issues that in no way related to football. We warned the thread participants on numerous occasions that the behaviour needed to improve for the thread to remain open. These warnings were ignored and the thread remained a negative presence on this forum and a burden on the mods due to the constant need to monitor and intervene in the thread.

The decision to finally close the thread was supported by moderators and site management. It will not be reopened.

I've probably got enough stories for my own podcast, but I've recorded as many as I can over the past 40-odd years and written a draft in book form. All the way from my earliest family records I have in documents from early 1800s to my family ending up in St Albans and Footscray... and supporting the mighty Bulldogs! 🙂🔴⚪🔵

Does anyone know who Adolf or Joseph barracked for ?
My guess Carlton and Bombers ?

Just trying to keep it relevant for the mods 😜

Remember when the Crows started, due to Adelaide's history encompassing German migrants they had a number of players with names of German origin. But then the 70s Hawks had all those blonde guys like Knights, Crimmins, Rice, etc who looked a bit Aryan. Then St Kilda during WW1 had to change their jumper colours as the red, white and black of the time matched Germany's flag. So Adolf would be torn. He'd probably be a fan of all the proposed 1980s mergers going by his aims, I wonder which club would be his 'Stalingrad/Eastern front' disaster though?

There will be some amazing stories to tell and remember just from your own family.
This history should never be forgotten , but I fear there are too many people have very little interest or understanding in it.
Some nobody pod caster they happen to become engaged with is all the info they need !
Your family have seen first hand how despots and egomaniacs can disrupt and ruin lives, and how easily and quickly it can happen.

I think my beliefs in this regard align with you.
Thanks gj.

Hope my historical family musings are OK? They were the (long) lead in to how I ended up being born and raised in the western suburbs! 🙂
I’d love to hear more….would there be an issue of there being a page for historical musings by Gj79? A lot of us have connections through that era, my wife’s side particularly have some stories from Germany in that time

Well whilst it’s sad why they had to migrate, we are all happy it turned out ok and we got some more Bulldog brothers 👍

Your historical musings don't breach the site rules.

You've tapped a rich vein of information, gj. You need to let it unfold here - people need to know!

I lament the lack of history being taught in schools today. As a (former) teacher, I saw it losing favour, particularly as a core subject, but was powerless to do anything about it.

Our lives lack depth without a broad knowledge of past events. History gives us a "sense of place" in the continuum of life, doesn't it?

Please continue!

It's one of my go to podcasts. I now listen to podcasts at the gym more than I listen to music.

I don’t listen to anything…am I a sicko?
I did the same for years, except my new gym has an annoying PT who just never shuts up.
About himself. I had to drown him out.

Well, of course, I'm somewhat flattered that you would go to the trouble Fossie of doing this.

There are are many voices on this forum that are worth listening to. I, like everyone else, have my favs. The must reads ... insight, analysis, perspective .... humour. You know who you are .... I don't have to single you out or name you .... I didn't like all your posts ... but I read them all .... every word ... because as Clive James said ... every word in a sentence is important. Unless of course you posted something in a thread that I couldn't give sh1t about and I exercised my right to choose whether or not I clicked on it. I didn't. In which case I wouldn't have read a word of your insightful and/or humorous contribution.

I've chosen the hill I wish to die on. There's no hard feelings. If, as a result, an interest ( I'll settle for an awareness) of history is the outcome then it hasn't been in vain. And language, if you understand language you're a chance of not being manipulated. Footy is great and it's a welcome distraction from everyday life. Sometimes other things are more important. We're in those times.

I always liked quotes. I'll leave you with a few

The price of democracy is eternal vigilance ........... be vigilant right about now

And from 3 of history's great philosophers

“To be is to do”—Socrates

“To do is to be”—Jean-Paul Sartre

“Do be do be do”—Frank Sinatra

Sorry to see NW go. For those who expressed an interest in my historical/family history musings, I'm not really sure where to start, so I'll begin with one that ties the modern day (well, the 1980s) to WW1 on a Ukrainian battlefield.

In the early/mid 80s, as a young adult, I got my left ear pierced. My parents were not overly enamoured of the idea. A few days later, we went to visit my maternal grandfather. My Mum pointed out to him (her father) what I'd done, expecting some sort of tut-tutting and support.

Instead, his response was "bah, when I was in Ukraine in the Austrian army, there were male "gypsies" (apparently this is now considered an ethnic slur, so just using for context) - some in the army, some civilians - with multiple ear rings. I'll be worried if he (me) gets a few more!"

Then he went on to reveal how cold it was in winter there. He was 17-18, and as well as fighting, they were occasionally assigned to protect the estates of aristocracy who were sympathetic to the Austro-Hungarian empire/Emperor. Sentry duty in winter was 2 hours exposed in the cold, sometimes reduced to 1 hour at a time. This was because it was not unknown to go out for your turn to relieve the previous soldier, only to find he'd died from the extreme cold - not helped by lack of sufficient nutrition. At one estate, the soldiers came into possession of abandoned women's clothing. To counteract the cold, they actually put some of the female undergarments on under their uniforms for additional warmth.

So his grandson getting a single ear ring some 65 years later was not overly concerning!

So true King….but you are not anonymous to me…we’ve met and shared a 🍺

I’m the same, I only look at the threads that interest me….how did bloody Mr Brightside win again….hasnt he retired yet 😜

Was that the era of the free burritos ?🌮
