Notre Dame fire

It's sad that the historic cathedral has had significant damage but it sounds like the structure remains intact and the artifacts were removed prior to the renovations starting.

The calls from Malcolm Turnbull for Australia to establish a fund to help restore the place are OTT. France is a modern, wealthy country. It's not like it's a natural disaster in the third world that has killed thousands.

Aus gives money to Indonesia and other muslim dumps when they have disasters and they still Hate Australia.
Better they give to people of our kin.

Was I supposed to know this building before it caught fire? Looks like something Paris would have 50 of.

If the Taj Mahal (which is Islamic architecture for those who don't know) was damaged the bleeding hearts would be bending over backwards for Australia to help out to fix it.

BRB just posing a photo of Notre Dame from that time I went there as if anyone gives the slightest of ****s.

Taj Mahal really is famous. Most people could very crudely draw it and remember to put in a garden and postcard sky.

This is search result for "old European building stock photo". Could be anywhere from Ireland to Moscow.

When the fire was first reported I hoped it wasn't a terror attack, because the French would have gone psychotic, there would have been pogroms against Muslims.

Attacking major religious sites is a classic Daesh tactic - they kicked off the Iraqi Civil War by blowing up the Golden Dome at Samarra.

windsor castle says hi

most of what you see in europe isn't as old as it looks. lots have been destroyed by fire or war and then rebuilt.

Trueish. Notre Dame however was one the more intact and original pieces, the stained glass rose windows for example from the 13 century.

Alot of history there & Notre Dame is considered the symbolic heart & soul of Paris & even France herself....'The Lady of Paris'.

To me it's symbolic of what the EU, NATO & the Rothschilds Multi-nat lackey in Macron have done to this once proud city & nation.....They have devastated & gutted her....The lack of media reporting on the civil strife taking place in France with the yellow shirt uprising, is no surprise.

What? Gilet jaunes have been massively reported.

Really, you'd never heard of Notre Dame? You seem a pretty worldly person.

Wrong. It was massive news for weeks, people were urging the US invade to stop them.

Exactly. Mullah Omas is claimed to have said he ordered them destroyed to show the West its own hypocrisy.

The Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Omar, explained why he ordered the statues to be destroyed in an interview:

I did not want to destroy the Bamiyan Buddha. In fact, some foreigners came to me and said they would like to conduct the repair work of the Bamiyan Buddha that had been slightly damaged due to rains. This shocked me. I thought, these callous people have no regard for thousands of living human beings - the Afghans who are dying of hunger, but they are so concerned about non-living objects like the Buddha. This was extremely deplorable. That is why I ordered its destruction. Had they come for humanitarian work, I would have never ordered the Buddha's destruction

Heard of it in so much as knew the universities and the kids movie I never watched took the name from somewhere.

Fair enough - it was pretty amazing inside, I know what you mean about Europe being full of cathedral that all look the same, but Notre Dame was THE one.

It is kind of like saying, of there's heaps of footy stadiums, what's so different about the MCG?

Yeah, the same nihilistic, Last Man vision that leads to people saying instead of space exploration we should spend more on welfare.

I've been reading Robert Fisk's big memoir - which memorably opens with his good friend Jamal Khashoggi arranging an interview with Bin Laden in 1998 - and he makes the point that the Taliban were better understood as the Army of the Refugee Camps and that everything they did was predicated on them having grown in godawful camps on the Pakistani border.

So the no TV thing? Well, they never had TV in the tents etc. The destruction of Bamiyan, when given context like that, is very easy to understand.

And you can BELIEVE that kids in the banlieues of Clichy Sous Bois and Saint Denis will be sitting watching this outpouring of grief - and the hundreds of millions of Euros - and wondering "why don't they spend that money on our shitty suburbs?"

And the Daesh recruiters in those suburbs will be saying "Look, they bombed our cities to dust because they are infidels, and our babies die in tents, and when God punishes them with fire, they have all this money to rebuild".

Quite simply, **** them and their shitty suburbs. They live in a country with a very ample welfare state - what more could be done for them? Hand holding, cradle to grave?

Removing the institutional racism they face would be a start.

Bullshit. Think of the Jews that fled pogroms in the 19th and 20th century - literal mass violence perpetrated against them in the Pale of Settlement. Or the Dreyfus affair in the same era in France. In spite of all those disadvantages and outright anti-Semitism, Jews prospered in Europe.
