Why should she or anyone else not get an allowance or the balance of an allowance just because they own a property that they could use? It is a bit unfair to those who own houses don't you think? If she did not own said house, she would be netting the very generous allowance anyway. If she wanted to, she could have put someone in her house to rent and earned the allowance and rented another property. She could have then negative geared the interest on the mortgage reduced her TI and taken the allowance. In the end the taxpayers may actually end up in a better position! As I said, I don't see a problem with it.

I am criticising her utter disdain for the indigenous and non indigenous NT residents who she had the honour to represent by permanently living outside of the NT during her time as a senator. Not for taking advantage of a loophole.

I don't think this claim can be correct because she attends a lot of events, is seen at many causes needing support in the territory. So she has to be in the NT a fair bit of the time for that to be the case. She,like all other fed pollies, had to go to Canberra, a lot. But of course, a federal senator can reside in both places.
ps she gets completely mobbed by the locals, by the indigenous at these events by the way, so she must have some popularity on the ground with her constituents, even if not with some BF posters!

Actually its prohibited when you only live in Canberra, which is why multiple polis have been humiliated into paying it back when it becomes public

only if Wayne Swan has a house in another town/city so he's having to duplicate resources. The point of the allowance is to subsidize an additional cost the poli is wearing as a result of their work in Canberra, not as a cash bonus

We had poli's claiming this who only had a residence in canberra, who were living rent free in canberra, and even some who subleased their property (which totally covered the cost of the original rent)

too often poli's have claimed them when the reason for the allowance is removed.

Police investigating man allegedly behind racist posts

Investigations are underway into a Central Coast chiropractor, allegedly responsible for posting racist comments on the Facebook page of outgoing Labor Senator Nova Peris.

As my colleague Mary-Louise Vince reports, NSW Police have today confirmed they're investigating what's been widely described as vile comments, allegedly made by Woy Woy-based chiropractor Chris Nelson against the outgoing Senator.

There's been a public outcry against the racist tirade, after the Senator shared it across her social media platforms on Saturday.

An online petition was set-up in response, calling on police to investigate and has so far has attracted more than 6000 signatures.

The NSW Chiropractic Council says it's also aware of the comments and is looking into the matter.

The ABC has approached Mr Nelson, who denies he's responsible. He says his Facebook account was hacked and declined to comment further.

But you are defending it. The "moral high ground" happens to be the law/regulations, introduced so as to avoid fraud/double-dipping.

If you (I speak generally - not you personally) break the law because you think it the "moral high ground" then 1. there will be no rule of law if this mindset is widely adopted; and 2. until that point is reached, you may in due course be in store for an unpleasant surprise.

Unless the role entails getting in a time machine, going back 20 years and running pretty fast we can be pretty confident she is unqualified. Her career since then hasn't had many proud moments.
