Damm it, well he should. Best of a bad bunch IMO.

He'd have a very hard time overcoming his job defending the most unpopular (or at least the most damaging) portfolio for the Liberals electorally. He has a good public image and is young and thats why he was given such a poisoned chalice. Maybe some time in the distant future.

Joe Hockey, who as workplace relations minister was the outgoing government's chief salesman on Work Choices, said Liberals should be realists and accept Labor's electoral mandate. "The Australian people know Work Choices is dead," he said.

Also, gives Costello some time to refresh himself on the back bench for a while & a possibility of making a challenge for leadership a year prior to the next election, should the opportunity present. I wouldn't completely write off his chances yet.

I wouldn't count that out.

At the moment I think a Brendon Nelson/ Christopher Pyne ticket would make for a good opposition. That would give a good mix of experience and fresh opinions and voices that will be heard.

*winces at the thought* I highly doubt it Dogga, those two are simpl Howard survivors, the Liberal party wants to move as far away fom Howard as possible now, we're seeing it already and I think i will continue. They need some small L liberal policies, ie better social and environmental policies (read: some other policy rather than just the economy) that combined with the fact that many ex-ministers dont want to do the opposition thing will mean we see a bit of a shift, for example I would be suprised if we had a by-election in Mayo (Downers seat) before the next election. Great news that Abbott is out of the running, though he never really stood a chance. Heres hoping for Turnbull, I think he'll get it.
