IMO If we still had JK we'd be over the moon with Waite at CHB. As you point out he has perfect athletic attributes for the position. He seems to be reducing the clanger kicks over time too. What we need is a CHF with some real presence to replace JK.

Hartlett will never be our best player, but given that he has that bit on mongrel we desperately lack, and has that presence and gives us a target accross HF, he may come back into the team sooner rather than later.

Kicked a bag for the Ants on Saturday, so there could be a chance he'll come in this week. Carlos may struggle to hold his spot this week.

i think hartlett is a chance and is one that needs that chance and experience without this he will not get better. I saw him against richmond, didnt really do much but look to see improvement in his next afl game.

I'm talking about a premiership CHF and an opportunity to get another gun KPP ;)

Time for the "kids" already on our list to stand up Gilly. We can't keep hoping for the "great white hope" to come though in the draft. Besides, we've already got enough guns from draft.

Time to start winning games.

I think that getting dropped back into the Ants will be all the spark that Carlos needs to get his game back in order.

I expect to see him back in side (if he gets dropped) in a couple of weeks full of fire.

:thumbsu: What he said...

Besides, wasnt it this attitude of drafting in experience that got us where we are now? Lets develop our own now. We have a bit of depth and there are some good kids coming through that will do the job for us in the future.

he will come back full of fire and do nothing. I have no doubts in his passion for the game and desperation but its his skills im concerned about.

I find this is a bizarre comment coming from you HBF. Our weakness has been our rucks and our spine (- Fevola and Waite). A premiership side needs a stronger spine, fullstop. Austin and Hartlett aren't our great white hopes. We are likely to have a pick in the vicinity of 3-6 come draft time, with Naitanui and Rich gone god knows why we wouldn't want to draft another gun tall.

I do feel for Carlos a little. He just seems to be shuffled all over the place, and for a guy who only picked up a footy a few years ago, it must be very very hard for him to settle. I know the modern player needs to be adept at playing in a variety of positions, i reckon we need to find a spot for Carlos, and just leave him there for a few weeks in a row.

I agree with what you have said here Gilly, however, we have to start developing our kids that we have on our list. Re: our ruckman, I rekon we have that covered now, with Cloke, Kreuzer and Hampson. They will get some support from Ackland, both O'hailpins and Jacobs.

As for our KPP's, i reckon our tall defenders are starting to take shape with Jamison, Bower and Waite all doing a pretty good job down there, and I would argue that Thornton is in career best form.

If it was me, I would be looking for a tall forward in this years draft, and we both know there are going to be a couple of real crackers early in this years draft.

Of course recruitment means you stop developing your existing kids . Seriously I'm not sure where you are coming from here. Look at the Ants, now that Bower is getting a regular senior game we don't have a lot of senior listed talls developing other than Austin and Edwards. Saddington is on the outer, wouldn't hurt having at least another 2 KPP's coming through when looking 5-6 years down the track.

I've been saying that for ages. The fact that they keep moving him around is very frustrating and looks like ruining his career.

Had he stayed in the one position for a couple of years now then maybe he might be able to perform to the standard that is demanded at AFL level.

Cornelius was on show on ABC last Saturday playing for Tasmania's VFL team. Gilly do you think he will grow enough/gain enough weight to play in a key position?

What other CHF options are there for this draft?

Hughes would pick the best available, not the best to fill a position on our list.

We need a player with X factor and another ground level goal kicker such as Yarran who you have seen play more than once. I'm salivating about adding Yarran to Walker, Betts, Benjamin and Anderson based on what I've read about his form this year.

We're just as likely to take a tall in the second round based on the list of the top 25 kids listed in the AFL prospectus.

Trengrove, McKernan or Lynch might be there.

You're absolutely right TG, I would hope we take best available with the first rounder. Long way until draft day, but at the moment, I see a few talls going between 3 and 7. I have my own little list of my top 10 although it is ridiculously early days to do that. At the moment I wouldn't see Trengove dropping outside the top 10 let alone falling to our second pick. I rate Yarran highly. He has that X factor as you say, by all reports has bulked up and looks stronger and is performing at WAFL senior level. The two U18's with good performances at senior level in the WAFL were taken at #3 and #7 last year. Sounds like Yarran has also spent more time in the midfield which will only help his cause. At this early stage I would expect a few talls who might be worth a punt on to be available around our second rounder. I also don't know much about the interstate kids and what talls are coming through there. At this stage your elite talls might come from Hurley, Naitanui, Trengove, McKernan, Cornelius, Cordy, Vickery, maybe a WA kid (I think called Cockie). Lynch and Hill might also be thereabouts, Lynch depending on his prognosis past knee reco and Hill being very bottom aged but by all accounts very talented.

There is probably a second group that might be worth a punt on depending on their progress for the rest of the year, including a couple of the 19 y.o's in the TAC...Burstin and Post. But there would also be Lisle, Sengstock (basketballer Larry's son), Milne, and a kid from the NT who was inligible last year and his name escapes me just now. There is also Smouha who was very raw this year and may or may not have made inroads this year.

Anyway, just a heads up on some names you will hear as the year progresses.

Jamieson, Bower, Thornton and Waite were brilliant on the weekend. I hope they can settle, stay injury free and continue to develop their cohesiveness as a unit through the season.

Not sure where that leaves Carlos but I actually hope they persist with him at CHF. He's not damaging but at least is a target, bit like Earl Spalding, and can add defensive pressure across half-forward also that will slow the teams that love to rebound from half-back - like with the Pies.

And i hope we draft a key forward this year if the opportunity arises. Fev won't be around forever and already if he does down our forward line's stuffed. Draft someone now and by the time we threaten for a flag he should be set in the side as another key fwd target.

Who would've thought steve johnson was gonna stand up and become the the force he did last year? he was in real trouble at the start of the year... i think we have the list we just need to develop them properly, between hartlett, carlos, fisher, kreuzer and hampson we should get some reward.. i mean look at west coast's forward line in their awesome era.. it was their midfield...

Didn't I just say that we needed some tall forwards in this years draft? Fev is 27, and now would be the prefect time to try and get a top 10 draftee to play forward in a few years time.

We can get mids at any time, we have recruited 2 gun young ruckman in the last 2 drafts, and we have covered our tall defenders for the time being.

So, in repeating myself, tall forwards should be our priority in this years draft.

Gugliotta ? Unbelieveable athlete with a bit of skill. Has a bit to learn and probably lacks the intensity required at this stage. However one to definately keep an eye on. His first year of eligability might see a lift in intensity I hope.

Bloody impressive list of names there Gilly. Think it's going to be a fun year.:)

Good work Gilly.

It looks like your better half is going to watch alot of footy this year. ;) :p

Getting good young KPP players will give us some depth in a couple of years and in the 5-6 years down the track you are talking about, we would like for those guys to be pushing the established players for a place in the team with the next bunch of young KPP's just joining us.

The last thing that we would want to do is fall back into the trap of bringing in an over-aged experienced player who is just there as a make weight until we can get one of our kids upto the same level (Martyn and Livo).

At the end of the day, we want to have kids joining us young, getting trained up by us to the highest levels and then retiring after being with the club for 300 games :)
