NTFA Div 1 Round 10

Deloraine v Bracknell, Sharks v Rocherlea, Bridgenorth v George Town, Scottsdale v Longford

Crucial Games lie ahead for Bracknell and Longford as they are virtually dead level in their battle for positions 5 and 6. And with just 8 games to go after this one there isn't much room for any slip ups, especially from Longford. Granted the Tigers are under pressure injury wise but they have come through it many times before. This week against Scottsdale could be treated as a mini "semi-final" and if Longford did lose, they could be a game and percentage out of the 5, a rare position. Scottsdale should account for the Tigers here. Deloraine are virtually in the "semi-final" mode as they attempt to make one final push for finals action, to do that they need to defeat Bracknell and with the Redlegs on the move towards finals, that looks tough even at home. The other games see George Town and Rocherlea as likely winners.

Tips: Bracknell by 15, Rocherlea by 100, George Town by 25, Scottsdale by 40

Tamar Cats v Fingal, Evandale v Perth, Old Scotch v St Pats, Uni-Mowbray v OLFC

Two questions that loom ahead of this round are: How will Fingal reply after their stunning loss to Evandale and was Evandales win against Fingal a one off?
Answer in brief is: Fingal should slaughter the Cats and Evandale were one week wonders. Other games should see Old Scotch entrench another nail in St Pats finals coffin and Uni-Mowbray who are back at full strength should crush OL's.

A lot of people would have thought that George Town would continue on their way but Bridgenorth came to play at Parrot Park yesterday, leading at every change to inflict the Saints second defeat of 2009 by 11 points and drop the Saints to second place on the ladder. Ron Smith with 4 goals and Joel Clements 3 led the scoring for the Parrots while Chris Walker, Danny Hall, Pat Mackrell were best for the Parrots. Shaun Muller and Martin Tuthill each got 4 for George Town while Christian Murfett, Ben Tuthill and Zac Noble were the main winners for the Saints, who also lost the Reserves and Under 19's matches and that was the first time that has occured since September 2001 that the Saints have lost all three games in the day.

This was another crucial game for the Redlegs who needed to win to keep the pressure on the top 5 and while the first half was a tight affair as the home side led by 3 points at half time the game had big momentum swings in the second half. Firstly the Redlegs strung 4 goals midway through the third term to be ahead by 27 points before Deloraine kicked 3 late goals to close within 9, however despite the many attempts of the Roos to close the gap the Redlegs kicked 4 goals in a row in the last to steady and win by 23 points, moving into 5th spot. Chris Walker got 4 for Bracknell while Jason French got 3 as Craig Burling, Kade Mulder, Josh Nunn and the big "Spiderman" Aidan Fleming were the best for Bracknell. Andrew Gleeson led the Roo's with 5 goals, while Jerome Whiteley, Luke Bloomfield and Adam Sherriff tried hard for the Roos. Bracknell very nearly won the Reserves match but Justin Curbishley pushed a shot wide of the posts with under 30 seconds left as Bracknell went under by 1 point.

It was rostered as Sharks v Rocherlea but it might as well have been Sharks v David Wickham as the towering full forward blasted through 13 goals in the Tigers 121 point rout of the Sharks at Hillwood. Rocherlea did lack a bit of accuracy in the first half leading by 47 points at half time (22 scoring shots to 5) but kicked 12.10 to 1.2 in the second half to send them top of the table with the big win. As mentioned Wickham booted 13 and his goal kicking deputy Daniel Maynard got 3, supported by Andrew Wilmot, Damien Pearce and Daniel Williams. Josh Moore with 3 and Dominic Marshall were the only standouts for the Sharks. Wickham now has 85 goals from just 10 matches this season!!

This like Bracknell's game against Deloraine was make or break for the Longford side and they did keep pace all game, but just lacked the finishing polish as the Magpies got through by 26 points but lacked accuracy with 11 more scoring shots. No major standout among the goalkicking as 9 goalkickers from both sides each got 2 as Hugh Williams, Daniel Roozendaal and Jo Boyce were Scottsdale's best. Sam Graham, Zeke Gossage and Ricky Tarrant were Longford's better players as the Tigers are out of the five for the first time since 2004. And as we know when your out of the five it's very hard to get back in.

Game of the Round next week looks to be Bracknell and Scottsdale as the Redlegs, who did lack a little bit early against Deloraine are back into the top 5 and now face Scottsdale who are just lurking there abouts in third spot on the table. The Redlegs got an impressive win without their full forward Josh Adams who is likely to miss about 2 months with a broken foot and they will need a similar performance at home to overhaul Scottsdale. In other games Deloraine's finals hopes virtually hang in the balance and a loss at Rocherlea will effectively end their hopes, The Sharks could face another horrible day at George Town, especially after George Town's surprise loss to Bridgenorth while Longford will need to be at full strength to overhaul a confident Bridgenorth side. How Paul Beechey prepares his players for this game could will determine the outcome.

Playing Fingal after a loss the previous week is almost impossible, and the Tamar Cats found that out good and proper after they were hammered particularly in the second half as the Valley Blues got back into the winners circle with an 80 point thrashing of last year's Grand Final opponents. Like the Grand Final in 2008 the same man led the goal scoring in the local butcher Tim Hall, kicking 5. Clinton Woods with 4 and Kade Lowe, Matthew Lowe and Ted Davis each got 3 goals while Richard Howe, Corey Bosworth and Heath Lowe led the resergence of the Valley. In a solo effort Steve Barron led with 8 goals for the Cats and Marc Davey was the best of a very poor bunch from the Cats.

Evandale weren't able to repeat their stunning upset win, but they did keep pace with Perth for 3 and a bit quarters though, getting within 10 points during the final term before the Magpies steadied in the final quarter to win by 36 points at the close of play in a very high scoring game. Paul Kelly and Shannon Buller got 5 goals and Paul Stone + Greg Latham got 4 for the winners and along with that quartet came support from Jamie Hayes and Scott Furley. Lenny Wyngaard got 6 goals for Evandale while Ben Rigby, Keith Lindsay and Callum Waters tried hard for the Eagles.

St Pats are running out of chances to get into finals contention and have virtually blown another chance against the rampaging Old Scotch at League Headquarters. Lurking about at half time trailing by 14, the Saints let it slip in the second half as the Scotchies took charge going to 33 points at three quarter time and 73 at the final siren. As always Old Scotch shared the workload around with 11 seperate goalkickers, Sam Tucker the leader of the pack with 5 goals and the better players were Tom Pedley (who continues his solid form), Shaun Smith, Angus Lyne and Stuart Johnston while Lenny Town with 4 and Walter Hulm plus Bjorn Spiteri were the only standouts for the Saints. However the Saints in the Reserves match stunned everyone when they inflicted Old Scotch's first defeat of 2009, winning by 1 point (9.8-62 to 7.19-61)

Like the Sharks v Rocherlea game, except it was Matthew Clayton v OL's as the Uni-Eagles who were back at full strength did as expected to OL's and won their match by a very easy 166 points. Clayton kicked 14 (but was named 5th best??), Michael Aram and Jade Jordan each got 4 while Rohan Willis, Grant Preece and Dane Colbeck led the Eagles charge along with Jason Reeves. Daniel Breadmore with 3 goals and Alex Crosland were positives for OL's.

All the focus next week will be on two places, being Perth and The Valley. Firstly at the Valley a battle for ladder leadership with Old Scotch heading down to their bogey place to tackle Fingal who well and truly got back into the circle after trouncing the Cats. The prize is top spot for the winner and if Old Scotch are successful here they will be two games clear with just 5 games to play and virtually one hand on the minor pennant, while a Fingal win will see them clear only on percentage, but with the Valley's soft run home against St Pats, OL's and Evandale it is virtually in sight. Much depends on Scotch's committment more than anything and if they can repeat the dose they could win and win well. Fingal will be stinging from their 68 point hammering at the NTCA and Kade Chapple will have that in their minds during the week. However I think the Valley boys are a bit vunerable and they might suffer a rare defeat at home this week. And to Perth, where the Tamar Cats can seal up 5th spot with a win against Perth, however the Cats have struggled for form and consistency all season long and Perth have simply stunned everyone's pre-season predictions and sit 4th on percentage. At home the Magpies look too strong and with Kelly, Buller and Latham all firing should have far too much for the Cats. St Pats while they should beat OL's will need to trounce them handsomely to get themselves back into calculations which they might do. The Saints need to win by 155 points to get back to level percentage which they should surely be able to do. And Uni-Mowbray while they are at full strength travel to Evandale for a rather interesting assignment, remember last year when Evandale stunned Uni at home?? Any lapse here for Wayne Kirby's side could prove fatal (Fingal won't need reminding of that)

Word on the street is that Uni have had a very good preseason and finished it off with two solid games of footy against Hillwood and Ringarooma.. beat hillwood 12 goals to 5, then on saturday smashed Ringarooma by 120 points!
Good to see a club who dont dish out money playing good team footy...

Not been around Uni long? I don't know what they are paying players this year but in the past have been big ones to "look after players", at the start of season 2007 we were 5k in the red, started 2008 20k in the black, 2009 saw us with nearly 30k and should have more by the start of next season. We may look after some people that need to travel 300klm to train twice a week and then play, but that is our worry and Fingal probably have the same travel diffulcities (although I hear they have a group that train at Youngtown), if Uni can get good quality players for free good on them and to all other clubs same thing but lets not bag other clubs out for what we HEAR they
are spending as it is usually very much inflated. Looking forward to this week!

Without doubt it's the last chance for Longford to get back into the finals action as a loss here will just about end their season. At the moment they are sitting about 1 game + 8.2% behind their opponent Bracknell and with the injury toll they have at the moment I can't see them getting close. Bracknell to end Longford's season. Other games look to go the way of the visitors George Town, Bridgenorth and Rocherlea although the Scottsdale/Rocherlea game should be a tight affair.

Div 2 Today: Perth v Fingal, OLFC v Old Scotch, Evandale v St Pats, Tamar Cats v Uni-Mowbray

An impressive effort by Perth against the sluggish Cats, however the question is can they back that up against Fingal? I think a repeat performance can occur here as Fingal would certainly find their game against Old Scotch was very testy. Perth narrowly for me. St Pats and the Tamar Cats both have must win games in their Round 12 encounters and while the Saints are likely to win their clash with Evandale, the Cats will struggle against Uni-Mowbray but the Uni boys do have a poor record at the Cattery and it won't be a walk over for the Eagles to win there. The other game should see Old Scotch (even with a Fingal win) likely to take top spot with a crushing win over OL's.

Tips: Perth by 6, Old Scotch by 190, St Pats by 20, Uni-Mowbray by 10

With Fingal and Tamar winning this week, there is now a 2 game and healthly percentage gap on 2nd and 3rd, so I would say the top 2 spots are almost set. In fact Fingal play Uni this week and Old Scotch play Perth so another couple of wins to the top 2 sides will see them open up a 3 game break and wont be caught from there.

Even if St Pats beat the Cats at the Cattery next week (very unlikely on yesterday's effort against Evandale) they would probably have to win 2 from their last three games to be safe and I can't see them getting anywhere near Fingal and they "might" catch Perth and Uni-Mowbray on a bad day. The Cats would be assured to beat OL's and Evandale you would think and probably face a flogging from Old Scotch.

Evandale yesterday only let St Pats dominate in the first quarter when they scored 6 goals to one and in the final 10 minutes when they kicked the last 4 goals to win. Evandale actually led by a point during the final term. Very nearly won the reserves too but St Pats pinched that with a goal 15 seconds from time.

Round 14 Uni-Mowbray v Perth will seal 3rd spot for the winner. Old Scotch might seal top spot but much depends on how much Fingal flog OL's by in Round 15.

They won't in the last 3 weeks: Tamar Cats, Fingal and Perth the last 3 games.

They haven't scored in the last 2 weeks! And does anyone know what the lowest end of year percentage ever is? Theirs is about 6 at the moment!

Went on a goal scoring rampage last week kicking 9.7 against Evandale
Normally a low percentage for a side at the end of the year is about 20-30% but in the herald sun today a team from South Aust has a percentage of 2.4

I personally think that Old Scotch in the reserves and Fingal in the seniors will be too strong, plus the conditions last Sunday were aparently attrocious so I reckon the heavy legs and 6 day turnaround might hurt the Uni sides.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these games and the Grand Final teams already through for that matter?

To be honest I was waiting for the knuckle from the middle of the 3rd quarter and nothing happened much to my suprise. They were actually very gallant in defeat. They deserve respect for how they carried themselves. Old Scotch were sensational and I think they realised that.

There was a bit of biff mid way through the second, but it was pretty tame really.

You were pretty close... St Pats troubled them a little in the mud bath that it was up there but Old Scotch got over the line in the end, and I would say you couldn't have been more correct on the seniors result!

I heard it has been a long time since they have won a senior flag, there would have been a bit of celebrating going on there I reckon. Also, I wonder when the last time a team in that comp won both the seniors and the reserves?

Old Scotch did it in 1986 with Paul Reinmuth and Martin Parry doing the double there. 1986 was the Scotchies last Seniors premiership win.

OL's did it in 1997

St Pats in 1996 and 99 (their 99 sides went through undefeated) and they won all three grades in 2002 (winning the Under 18's which was defunct in 2004)

Uni-Mowbray did it twice back to back in 1994-95.
