Number 6

Should whoever is picked at number 6 for the first test have a first class average greater than 40?

Bancroft is developing into one of the more adaptable players in the country. Still has the ability to bat time but shows an increasing talent for putting the foot down if required.

Another thing he’s got over Nevill.

The only thing I have slight concerns about is his keeping against spinners, and Lyon will be bowling a lot of overs. That is my only slight hesitation over giving him the gloves.

Screw what he has over Neville. He is not a test keeper. He is however a worthwhile option for us as a test batsmen and that's in any position 1-6 really.

Whoever the best keeper is. Neville I suppose. Not great as he won't score but he won't leak chances/runs behind the stumps.
I didn’t think his keeping was that great when he played Tests. Anyway. Will see come Friday!

Was/is Bairstow a test keeper? It's worked for England.

Good for them. I don't like the idea of someone making his debut as a young batsmen also having to take the gloves in an ashes test. Hard enough as a young bat establishing yourself and finding/applying domestic confidence and form. Don't need him having a potentially ordinary time behind the stumps (could happen as he's at best OK and not a first choice keeper for his state) and it wrecking his confidence with the bat. Unnecessary. Better to just go with a specialist keeper Neville or Carey (if Carey then we leave him in and give time not toss him out after a lean run with the bat).

Would like Bancroft to come out and say he wants to be a test batsmen like Handscomb did and not a WK appart from limited overs shite.

it's not like Lyon will turn them at right angles. Shouldn't be a problem.

It's got nothing to do with the turn. It's being able to react to edges off the bat. It's being able to read which is the offie and which is the over spinner. It's being able to move your feet so you can take anything down the leg side. It's being able to have soft hands so you can get a stumping opportunity if it arises.
Brad Haddin was always compared to Gilly for his batting but he was also the best keeper in the country.

An extra 30 runs from your keeper won't win you many matches. But dropping someone on 5 who makes a century can lose you one.

Bingo.

The last thing I want is a keeper dropping Joe Root or Cook!

neville lovers, Smith stood next to him in the 3 sheild games ,( must be something in it ) shows the selectors are thinking automatic NSW wk selection
past it\

I'm just happy it's not Wade! He was beyond awful. Happy enough with Paine, end of the ay we've picked a genuine keeper which is good.

My philosophy through this whole ordeal (going back to last year when Nevill was dropped) was pick the best keeper, batting well and truly secondary. Don't blame the keeper for the top 6 fails (which is what I believe happened to Nevill).

But I'm with you, just happy they didn't pick Wade and went with a genuine keeper. A handy 50 or two wouldn't go amiss, but so long as there aren't any awful mistakes behind the stumps I'm happy.

Also happy for Paine, he seems like a really good guy and after his injury his career looked al but over. Good grafting by him to get back, even if it is in odd circumstances

Exactly. A keeper first and foremost is there to make sure every chance is taken. Runs are a bonus. Paine isn't a mug with the bat and he can allow the other batsman to be free flowing anyway. He can definitely stay in with a recognised batsman.

I guess what's in the back of the selectors' minds is the last Australia Ashes series in 2013-14 where Brad Haddin had to resurrect the 1st Innings in all 5 Tests after some ordinary top order batting. Any repeat of that this summer and we could be in some trouble.

Then how about the top 6 bats show some responsibility and backbone and not gift wrap their wickets playing silly shots. No Maxwell should help in this regard

Agreed, but anyone who has been watching the standard of batting in Australian cricket understands that our batting can be brittle. Occupation of the crease is not exactly their forte. I'm certain that is why Bancroft got the nod, because he showed in a recent Shield match that he can actually stay at the crease for a long period of time and accumulate runs, a rarity in today's cricket.

Happy Bancroft and not another basher was picked we need more test style batsmen
