I reckon this article is far too diplomatic, except of course to the Saints and Demons, 'cos fakm, natch.

So give us your versions!

If I could be arsed I would have also included the revised (commonly accepted) number 1 pick from each year and when they actually got selected as a reference point.

Grouped based on overall ability/impact.

Rayner still looks overweight and having minimal impact in a top 2 team. They are carrying him. If he wasn't a top end pick he would be out of that team.

Much like us in 2014, the Lions would have been better off taking Carlton's offer (3 + 10 for 1 + 15) and landing Cerra at 3 and one of Brander of Fogarty at 10.

I'll admit to not watching a heap of Lions games but I haven't seen anything from Rayner to suggest he is any better than McCartin.

I suppose you might surmise by looking at this list that I've judged the player unfairly based on the success of their teams, but I have never seen a performance from the Carlton 3 or "Lids" that has left me thinking they were guns. At most they've been good, at worst totally forgettable and nothing you could build a successful team around.

Boyd had one good game, and yes it was a grand final. He did next to nothing for the club that drafted and developed him, Patton was better for them.

But you are right though

McCartin before he retired due to injury

When you look at Paddy's stats for playing Key forward in a bad side, he actually wasn't that bad. His averages in his first 35 games are comparable to the likes of Hawkins, Kennedy etc.
Josh Kennedy 35 games - 0.8 goals - 8.7 disp - 5.7 marks
Tom Hawkins 35 games - 1 goal - 10.8 disp - 5.1 marks

Paddy certainly copped and still cops a lot more flack than he deserves. A proper run at it without injuries and i genuinely believe he'd be a very good player.

HE's in training and got the all clear. Will nominate for the draft. We can still get him back on the list for nothing or he goes into the draft were anyone can take him. I think we need to put him back on the list. As stated above he just needs continuity before you know what you've got and I can only cope with a Joel Smith scenario once in a lifetime.
