Reasons for number swaps:

60 of the 64 number changes listed in the previous post were obviously due to players wanting to move up the list to a smaller number. The four occasions where players moved to a bigger number had differing reasons...

1. Will Slade (12 to 37). Was delisted at the end of 2005 but then added back on as a rookie for 2006. By that stage his number 12 had already been given to Trent West.

2. Ray Sarcevic (13 to 42). Not exactly sure about this one but I believe it may have been due to him thinking 'unlucky 13' was the reason he only played three games in 1984. Once he had managed only one game in 1985 wearing no.42, he probably realised it was less to do with luck and more to do with just not being very good.

3. Gary Malarkey (5 to 6). Seem to remember that he retired at the end of 1983 but then had a change of heart and returned to play another three seasons. By the time he came out of retirement, Gary Ablett snr had already been given the famous no.5.

4. Craig Cleave (32 to 45). Played 4 games in his debut of year of 1982 but then went missing for the whole of 1983 (long term injury?). By the time he returned to play 12 games in 1984, his no.32 had been given away to Michael Lenaghan.

I've got the first one (24 to 4) listed under 1995 but didn't add the other one (4 to 24) because he had spent 5 years at Hawthorn in between and didn't really think it counted as a swap.

I did miss another one though....Robert Scott wore no.50 for his first 2 games (1986) before swapping to no.45 in 1987 and then no.8 in 1988.
 
Would Trent West get #1? It usually goes to a ruckmen and he has moved up the pecking order now with King's departure.

Another one to add.....

The historical stats on the AFL website (see link below) seem to suggest that Barry Stoneham went from 26 to 53 then back to 26 in his first year in 1986. That sounds a bit unlikely to me but I'm not prepared to argue because my memory isn't that good.

Also, I could have added some other swaps like Gerard Bennett (42 to 36) and David Innella (41 to 13) who were on the list but didn't play senior footy.....but I think I've already gone a bit too far with this topic!!

Not just Hunt. Harley started life at Geelong as number 37.

Not at all. Top work and a good read. Ya can never go to far with the facts. Unless you've tattooed those facts to your body. That may be pushing things a little.

Would be interesting to know how many of those players swaped numbers after say 50 games. It appears a lot of those swaps were made early on in their careers. In saying that I wouldn't think to many of our premiership side would change numbers

The Tommahawk would fit nicely into the big number 1!

Varcoe shouldn't have been offered number 5 either. I know the Ablett boys turned it down, but it would have been more appropriate for someone to earn the number rather than be given it.
