Numbers available

Assuming we don't redraft PJ (which we may), we have the following jumper numbers available for next year (some from previous years):

7
11
17
21
23
25
26
30
32

And these players would probably be looking at them:
New draftees
Spencer
Strauss
Blease
Fitzpatrick

I would think Pick #12 would slot into No. 7, but apart from that there isn't really any urgency with the rest.

Bennell may be due for a lower no., unless he has a particular connection with 43. Maybe 21?

No 7 good for a draft pick i reckon

Joel Macdonald might want a better no. than 28?

Agree with the idea that we should keep 11 in circulation...maybe Gawn/Fitz?

Would like to see everyone keep the same number and stop ****ing around as if it means something important.

Stupid comment.

If a player has the opportunity to have a number significant to them in someway or another, why wouldn't they opt for a change? Players can be connected to numbers through family heritage, eg. Their dad might have worn a particular number and they'd feel great to be able to carry it on.

It's an Aussie tradition.

-1 internets for you.

I'd want #88 and the crunts wouldn't let me have it.

Lawsuit.

P.S - So out for Aussie traditions

7 - Strauss

11 - Our first pick - To give him an immediate understanding on what it means to wear the red & blue.

17 - Blease

21 - Jetta

23 - Bennell

25 - Fitzpatrick

26 - Spencer

30 - I still think McNamara will be rookied by Melbourne.

32 - 2nd pick - We should make sure this number isn't retired, that dog Bruce doesn't deserve it.

7 - Pick 12
11 - Hold for half decent ruckman
17/21 - Strauss/Blease
23 - Hold
Give the rest to anyone who wants them

My view on numbers would be I'd be honoured to wear a significant number and would generally prefer a low number. However if I got a decent high number like 44, 45, 43, 36, 33, 32 I'd be happy to keep it. Make a career out of it like Jamar might do with 40. After that it would have to be something significant like the ex captain asking me to take over his number (which I'd do for 23 in an instance as its my fav). I don't find the actual numbers themselves significant, but understand the significance placed on numbers by those who have worn them previously.

Why should Blease get an upgraded number? He hasn't even played yet!

Strauss has though...only to show how rubbish he has

[/drunken rant]

If a player wants an "upgrade" from a high number to a lower number and they've earnt it then no problem.

I also understand why the club likes to bestow certain previous numbers (eg 4, 9, 31) on new players and carry on a tradition as well as honour but I think it can become too manufactured and predictable. I'd rather see new numbers coming into the fray and players giving them their own personality instead of necessarily reliving previous numbers.

It would be good if who ever we get at pick 12 can simply chose which one he wants out of a batch. IMO it could have just as much an impact on the player as giving them the number (and pressure) of a club great. They make their own decision and from day 1 decide their destiny as a player not a product.
