My daughter is starting year 11 next year but is in the process of having to choose her subjects now. She wants to be a nurse.
She intends doing vcal subjects instead of the normal year 11/12 type standard ones. I would prefer she does the standard subjects, get an atar score and then go to uni. Never considered vcal and always thought it was more for trades. Any advice from anyone studying nursing or who finished a nursing degree or even a current careers teacher would be great.

VCAL and a VET certificate in Allied Health are definitely a viable pathway into nursing. I'm not an expert in this, but would expect that the ATAR and nursing at University would be a better pathway into more specific nursing roles, such as midwifery.

But if your daughter can get started working more quickly through the VCAL & VET pathways as well as limiting her Tertiary Education debt in doing so, go for it.
