Teams

There will be 8 teams in the 2017 edition, from 13 applicants.
The remaining 5 applicants (North, Saints, Geelong, Richmond, West Coast) have been granted provisional licenses, pending womens game development in their areas, originally slated for 2018. However Simon Lethlean from the AFL later said it was more likely to be 2019.

Players

The eight clubs have been asked to nominate their preferred marquee players. The AFL will try to keep players in their home states, and apparently the players will have a say in their destination.
  • The AFL will assign marquee players to clubs, initially this will be limited to two marquee players per club.
  • Clubs can submit 5 marquee nominations as a 'wishlist' of which they will receive two players.
  • Marquee contracts will be for one season only.
  • State based drafts to be held on October 10
  • Lottery based draft system
  • A father-daughter rule will apply for any father who has played 1 game for any AFL club with a womens license.
  • 2 Marquee players for each club were formally announced on July 27.
  • The priority selection breakdown allows Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle to pre-sign one player who has an association with the club. Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions can each pre-sign two players, while Greater Western Sydney has the option of four.
  • The eight clubs also can each list two rookies (players new to the code or who have not been registered in organised football competition over the past three seasons).
  • The rest of the clubs' player lists will be completed at the AFL women’s draft in mid-October.
List structure

  • 2 marquee players.
  • 20 drafted players.
  • 3 free agents (players who don't get drafted). [This can be ex-players]

on the submissions

Here's a snapshot of what the biddings clubs outlined in their proposals:

  • Adelaide's bid centered on an "exciting" and "well-supported" approach to women's football, creating pathways for those who aspire to play at the highest level.
  • The Brisbane Lions outlined their suitability for a team by illustrating how their existing facilities could be used to "make dreams come true" for female "superstars".
  • Carlton vowed to take "a genuine" approach to its women's team, arguing it had existing facilities and the right coaching staff to support female players.
  • Collingwood's proposal was built on its vision of being Australia's biggest and most inclusive sporting club. The Magpies would use their $25 million state-of-the-art facilities to support a women's team.
  • Fremantle lodged a "compelling and unique" case, proposing that Curtin University and the City of Cockburn would be the club's major partners. The Dockers said players could be offered either a job with the club or education and scholarship opportunities via Curtin.
  • Geelong's said its bid was aligned to the club's values of "respect for diversity, respect for women and, in particular, allowing women and people to be the best they can possibly be".
  • Greater Western Sydney wanted a women's team to "break down barriers" and grow participation from grassroots to the elite level.
  • Melbourne focused on "opening up its elite facilities" in preparation for a women's team.
  • North Melbourne argued it understood the women's football landscape, pointing to its "existing and robust model for women's football" and its long-term partnership with Melbourne University's women's team.
  • Richmond said its campaign was driven by "its authentic and long-term commitment to gender equity, and the establishment of a culture that would allow a women's team to thrive".
  • St Kilda, the first club to appoint a female assistant coach, said its bid was based on creating an "integrated high-performance network of three teams".
  • West Coast's vision was to field "a sustainable, professional, and premiership-winning" team to grow women's football in Western Australia.
  • The Western Bulldogs argued they would take "a genuine high-performance approach" to women's football to inspire young female players.

So going off what Jake Niall reported:

1. One club from each state outside of Victoria.

2. Fremantle had a 200 page submission and they involved Curtin University. Their push of the product was ahead of West Coast despite West Coast being the bigger club.

3. Geelong had a fantastic submission based on geography and the area they would cover. Problem was that their area and Western Victoria doesn't produce a lot of female players.

4. The Northern Corridor, North of Melbourne where Darebin plays, Carlton have been very strong in that area and are geographically close to that area so they had an advantage there.

5. Collingwood are also strong in that Northern Corridor and they felt that Collingwood's brand was strong and they wanted a powerful club.

6. The balanced off a bit with the lesser supported clubs Melbourne and the Dogs who made all the running against bigger clubs which cost St Kilda who have a strong women's football area as well. He seemed to throw in a little bit more supposition on this point though.

7. Richmond disappointed as they felt having a female president and a culture push they have made gave them a strong submission.

So Carlton probably didn't get a spot because they got on their knees. They did put in the work in the Northern Corridor and they were in a very strong area for playing stocks. Collingwood do share the same area but it was their massive brand the AFL felt they needed to have to add balance and get more support. This may help with sponsorship and crowds, time will tell.

It appears St Kilda were unlucky but were a victim of the AFL wanting Collingwood's brand and the fact that Melbourne and the Dogs were deemed to be more deserving because of the work they had put in previously.

Cats are just plain unlucky in that their area isn't well represented at this time.

Nothing of the North submission though.

Excellent summary, thanks. Although this bit concerns me:

Grand final to be played on the weekend of round 1 of the AFL season

The GF on the opening round of season 2017? A clash? What about playing it on the preceding weekend, which is the lull between the end of the NAB series and the start of the AFL season.

I think the rationale is that it would be a 'curtain raiser' to a round 1 men's match, hoping to capture some of that audience. It also lets them draw on the hype around the opening of the men's season. But I can see the argument both ways - having the grand final on its own weekend in between the preseason/season opening, if properly marketed, might attract an audience happy to watch something different when there's no men's match to compete with.

Melbourne have released 500 Foundation womens team memberships at $250 a pop. Stand to make $125000 straight of the bat if they sell them all. From posts in the Dees forum, some have been sold already and they just came out. I guess there are few opportunities to be a foundation member in a club as old as MFC.

Edit, Well that didn't go as planned, but it seems to work so I will leave it.

News re AFLs broadcast plans. Huge news and confirmation the AFL is going all in

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...-for-first-womens-season-20160904-gr8hzu.html

Heading says 2 games, but the article says 2 or more. Then when it has wrapped up TV, it is talking streaming rights with Telstra.
They are going a seven round season, playing each other once, after initial reports of a 6 round season. They are going to try to blow other womens sports out of the water. Expect a frenzy of media leading up to the first womens game, and yes, ratings will not cover costs, but they are looking 10 years down the track, when todays 8 year old girls are turning 18. We will not see the potential of womens AFL until it is the first choice sport of the best athletes.

Well it couldn't be Women's AFL (WAFL) unfortunately. How about the Female AFL (FAFL) or Ladies' AFL (LAFL)? :D

Or AFL Ladies (AFLL), I can imagine a logo including goal-posts, but better than the current W logo.

I'm glad to finally see a womens league being put together, it has been some womens lifelong dream which before this they could no longer fulfill. I think the name is not right though it needs to be in like letter form rather than AFL the a word. I agree that it would sound the best as the WAFL but WA have already taken that name. I'm not sure what else it could be though. It'll be great to see the womens league up and running, Its good that they made the games free to watch. I will definitely go check at least one out. Preferably Carl Coll, the rivalry continues!

Seriously? they are starting a new NATIONAL comp from the ground up but still insist on the Grand Final being in Victoria.

No mention of the MCG, so wouldn't even be surprised if it it was Etithad

They need to either rotate it between the states, or have the highest place team earn the right. They don't have any contract excuses not to.
